Release the hounds! Singapore deploys ROBOT DOG to help enforce social distancing (PHOTOS, VIDEO)
Singapore has taken the monitoring and enforcement of social distancing to a whole new level, opting to deploy a robot dog, backed by a fleet of drones, to make sure citizens keep their hands to themselves to combat coronavirus.
Beginning on Friday May 8, the robot dog, creatively dubbed ‘Spot,’ will monitor the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park in the city-state.
It is the first trial of a new initiative to help manage and enforce social distancing in the Singapore’s parks, gardens and nature reserves, all managed by the National Parks Board.
The motorized mutt delivers a pre-recorded message reminding visitors to keep a safe distance from each other and is fitted with cameras and video analytic software to calculate and estimate visitor numbers to a given park and to monitor their density. The machine will be accompanied by a handler during the trial.
Spot’s cameras will reportedly not be fitted with or tied to facial recognition software and will not collect or store any personal data. For the time being, at least.

Top Republican Lawmaker Disclosed Stock in Chinese Company He Labeled a Nat Sec Threat
Representative Michael McCaul, who has harshly criticized China in his position as the ranking member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, disclosed that his family owns stock in a Chinese tech company he described as a threat to national security.
An April 20 periodic transaction report showed that McCaul disclosed a February purchase of between $50,000 and $100,000 in shares of the Chinese firm Tencent Holdings, Politico reported.
In November, several months before the shares were purchased, the Texas congressman said that Tencent Holdings is among the “Chinese companies that threaten America’s economic and national security.”
The tech conglomerate is “heavily involved” in the “social credit system, a dystopian system China has implemented to score its citizens’ behavior,” McCaul said at the time, as well as an “integral part” of the Chinese Communist Party’s industrial policies and “one of four national champions for artificial intelligence.”
McCaul’s lawyer, Elliot Berke, said the shares are not owned personally by McCaul but by his wife, and the decision to invest in Tencent was made by a third party.

Trump orders Pentagon to prep for cartel fight
President Trump on Thursday said he had given the Pentagon the green light to call up reserve units of the armed forces to prepare for a major offensive against the Mexican drug cartel.
"Effective today, pursuant to section 12304 of title 10, United States Code, I am authorizing the Secretary of Defense to order units and individual members of the Selected Reserve to active duty to augment active component forces for the effective conduct of ‘Enhanced Department of Defense Counternarcotic Operation in the Western Hemisphere,'" Trump wrote in the order.
Trump has long vowed to wage a significant fight against the cartel, which exerts near-total control over the drug trade south of the border and whose drug shipments and violent conflicts often spill over into the United States.

Illinois releases 4,000 prisoners early, including 146 sex offenders, 64 murderers
The state of Illinois has released 4,000 prisoners as part of its pandemic mitigation strategy, a group of convicted criminals including 146 sex offenders and 64 convicted murderers.
Prisons and jails around the country have resorted to setting criminals free in the hopes of preventing disease outbreaks within correctional houses. In Illinois, criminals were either pardoned by Gov. JB Pritzker or else released early by authorities.
The state attorney's office said it was originally told the government would only be releasing "non-violent" offenders as part of the strategy. The state has also been releasing offenders so quickly some areas have not had time to inform victims, as required by law.

Syrian Sources Claim ISIS Leader Was Captured In Recent Deir Ezzor Operation
ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi was captured by the U.S.-led coalition and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in a recent security operation in southeast Deir Ezzor, the Raqqa Media Center reported on May 7.
The operation, which took place on May 6, targeted the town of al-Zawr. Five helicopters of the coalition supported the operation, engaging targets inside the town. Two of the wanted personnel blew themselves up, while a third person, an Iraqi citizen, was captured.
According to the Raqqa Media Center, which is affiliated with the SDF’s self-administration, the captured Iraqi was none other than the infamous ISIS leader, al-Qurashi.
“The air landing lasted for hours and was the largest in terms of the number of participating personnel, planes and the duration of the landing,” the media center said in a Facebook post describing the operation in which al-Qurashi was allegedly captured.
Al-Qurashi, whose real name is Amir Mohammed Abdul Rahman al-Mawli al-Salbi, was appointed as the ISIS leader a week after the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a U.S. raid on northwest Syria in October of 2019.

European Commission eyes new financial crime unit
The European Commission is considering the creation of a new authority to police financial crime and monitor banks more strictly, it said on Thursday. The suggestion came as part of a financial crime action plan sent to the EU’s 27 governments.
“An integrated system should be put in place” to tackle money laundering and financial crime with an EU-level supervisor, stated the document.
Supervision of the system at the EU-level could be run by the European Banking Authority – the regulatory body of EU banks – or done by “a new, dedicated body, the Commission said.
Currently, it is up to member states to individually crackdown on money laundering and terrorist financing. But the EU found in 2019 that its financial crime rules were being unevenly or partly implemented. There was also limited cooperation among financial intelligence units across the EU, said the Commission on its website.
The Commission would initially assess the impact of setting up such a scheme.

Federal Government Added 1,000 Employees in April
CNSNews.com) - As overall employment in the United States was dropping dramatically in April, the federal government added 1,000 jobs, according to the employment report released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Meanwhile, even overall government employment declined as state and local governments dropped jobs.
"Government employment dropped by 980,000 in April," said the employment report. "Employment in local government was down by 801,000, in part reflecting school closures. Employment also declined in state government education (-176,000)."

Among them were the six million Jews and millions of others killed systematically by the Nazi regime, many of them in concentration camps across Europe.

Here comes the polar vortex: America’s north-east braced for record May cold
The north-eastern US is about to get a cold spring farewell from winter’s bad boy, the polar vortex, which could bring rare May snowfall and record-low temperatures to some areas over the Mother’s Day weekend, forecasters say.
Usually the polar vortex is a batch of cold air that stays trapped in the Arctic all winter, but a couple times during the season, it wanders south and brings bone-chilling cold and snow to Canada and parts of the United States.
Around this time of year, the polar vortex usually breaks up, but this breakup is a bit different, said Judah Cohen, a winter storm expert for Atmospheric Environmental Research, a commercial firm outside Boston.
“The polar vortex didn’t do much the whole winter, but on the way out I guess it kind of sent a message: Just because I didn’t do much this winter, don’t think I can’t,” Cohen said Thursday.
A low pressure system off the coast of southern New England is pulling cold air down from the north, Alan Dunham, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts, said Thursday.
