Cell phone data suggests the roads around the Wuhan lab was shut down for a number of days in October.

Coronavirus: Dr Anthony Fauci self-quarantining along with two other White House task force members

Three members of the White House coronavirus task force, including Dr Anthony Fauci, placed themselves in quarantine after contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19, another stark reminder that not even one of the nation’s most secure buildings is immune from the virus.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a leading member of the task force, has become nationally known for his simple and direct explanations to the public about the coronavirus and Covid-19, the disease it causes. Also quarantining are Dr Robert Redfield, director of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Stephen Hahn.

Fauci’s institute said that he has tested negative for Covid-19 and will continue to be tested regularly. It added that he is considered at “relatively low risk” based on the degree of his exposure, and that he would be “taking appropriate precautions” to mitigate the risk to personal contacts while still carrying out his duties. While he will stay at home and telework, Fauci will go to the White House if called and take every precaution, the institute said.

Ohio State University agrees to $10M settlement with abuse victims

May 9 (UPI) – Ohio State University will pay more than $40 million to 162 former students who said a team doctor abused them over two decades, the school announced.

The $40.9 million settlement announced Friday will be split among victims of Dr. Richard Strauss, a university-employed doctor, who died in 2005. The abuse happened between 1978 and 1998.

"The university of decades ago failed these individuals - our students, alumni and members of the Buckeye community," President Michael Drake said. "Nothing can undo the wrongs of the past, but we must do what we can today to work toward restorative justice.

Iran willing to exchange all prisoners with US

BEIRUT, LEBANON (11:00 A.M.) – Iran has expressed its willingness to conduct a full exchange of prisoners with the United States, the Reuters News Agency reported.

The news site quoted a spokesman for the Iranian government, Ali Rabei, as saying that his country was ready to conduct a full exchange of prisoners with the United States, and that Washington had not yet responded to Iran’s invitation in this regard.

“We are concerned about the safety and health of the Iranians in prison … We hold America responsible for the safety of the Iranians amid the outbreak of the coronavirus,” he said.

Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have been at a decade-long high, following the assassination of the Quds Force commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani, near the Baghdad International Airport on January 3rd.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) would respond to this assassination on the evening of January 8th, when their forces fired 18 missiles towards the U.S. military wings at two Iraqi airbases.

The tech firms getting their hands on NHS patient data to fight coronavirus

Big technology companies could use the coronavirus pandemic to gain a foothold in the UK’s health service, the Bureau of Investigative Journalism has learnt.

A number of companies will get unprecedented access to confidential patient data, such as test results and NHS 111 calls, after winning deals with the NHS to help tackle the coronavirus pandemic. NHS X, the health service’s digital arm, insists that the access will be time-limited, subject to data protection rules and only for very specific purposes. But critics complain about a lack of transparency in awarding the deals and that once the health crisis is over, this could place the companies at a commercial advantage.

Privacy campaigners are especially concerned that the crisis must not lead to a data “free-for-all” in response to a relaxation of rules that now permits the NHS to pass patient information onto private companies specifically working on projects tackling the pandemic.

Fed Chair Powell Has Millions Invested with BlackRock, the Firm that Will Manage a $750 Billion Corporate Bond Bailout Program for the Fed

Most Americans likely assume that Jerome Powell, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve, is an economist, like the prior chairs of the Fed over the past 40 years. He’s not. Powell is a former investment banker at the Wall Street firm, Dillon Read; a former partner at the controversial private equity and leveraged buyout firm, the Carlyle Group, which has spent over $1 billion over the past decade lobbying the federal government; and a former lawyer at Davis Polk, a Big Law firm that played a key role advising the government and Treasury in the 2008 Wall Street bailout.

Powell’s background would be strange enough but now consider this. The Vice Chairman for Supervision at the Fed, Randal Quarles, who is in charge of supervising the largest and most dangerous Wall Street bank holding companies in the U.S., has an uncannily similar background to Powell. Quarles also worked previously at Davis Polk and the Carlyle Group. (Powell and Quarles are also good friends, according to Senator Elizabeth Warren.)

Both men were well schooled in leveraged buyouts before coming to the Fed. Both men are now involved in what is effectively levering up $454 billion of taxpayers’ money provided to the Fed under the recently passed CARES Act into a $4.5 trillion leveraged buyout fund of toxic debt from Wall Street banks. After taxpayers’ take the first $454 billion in losses on those purchases, the remainder may be sold off to private investors. If this sounds to you like a set-up on behalf of the one percent, it should.

Trump administration tightens visas for Chinese reporters

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is tightening visa guidelines for Chinese journalists in response to the treatment of U.S. journalists in China, as tensions flare between the two nations over the coronavirus.

The Department of Homeland Security has issued new regulations, set to take effect Monday, that will limit visas for Chinese reporters to 90 days. There is a potential to extend the visa. Those visas previously didn’t have to be extended unless the employee switched companies, and they were considered open-ended.

The regulations don’t apply to journalists from Hong Kong or Macau, two territories considered semiautonomous, according to the regulations published Friday in the Federal Register.

The agency noted what it called China’s “suppression of independent journalism , ” including “an increasing lack of transparency.”
