Personal note, almost applied to the State Department years ago. But was afraid of getting stuck in Yemen or some other shit hole. Also the test essay questions had some immoral shit. Like would I work with a known drug dealer ina Latin American country if he could supply needed material to the embassy if said embassy was hit by an earthquake. When I was writing out the pros and cons , I stopped and checked myself. "am i really writing out a plan on how to get the U.S. GOV to work with a drug dealer?" That was what really made me give up on it. Was excited up until that mental exercise.
