Another standout athlete files suit against Punahou, alleging sexual assault

Kuehu’s lawsuit, filed Friday in Circuit Court, claims coach Dwayne Yuen began grooming her for future sexual advances during her freshman year on the Buffanblu basketball team ― and that he sexually assaulted her at some point in 2006.

The repeated sexual assaults ‘terrified’ Kuehu, who says she was afraid that reporting her coach for misconduct would result in the loss of her basketball scholarship at Punahou, according to the lawsuit.

News of Kuehu’s lawsuit comes just a day after allegations against the same coach were brought forth in a lawsuit by Bellator world champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane.

That suit, like Kuehu’s, accuses Punahou of gross negligence in their failure to protect the girls from Yuen, whom the lawsuit calls a ‘sexual predator.’

Kuehu, who attended Punahou between 2004 and 2008 and was twice named the state’s top girls basketball player, says in the lawsuit that she was forced repeatedly to deal with manipulations, unwanted advances, grooming, and sexual assaults.

The suit also claims that Punahou swept complaints under the rug when brought to their attention.

In a statement released earlier this week by the school after Macfarlane’s suit, Punahou said, “We are deeply troubled by reports of sexual abuse raised by three former students. The reports allege abuse from 2004-2005 by Dwayne Yuen, a former girls basketball coach at our school. We are currently investigating these reports and are committed to working with the survivors to find resolution and healing.”

The statement continued, “In no uncertain terms, Punahou stands with survivors of sexual abuse everywhere, and we respect the courage it takes to report these incidents.”

After Kuehu had ended her playing career at Punahou, the lawsuit claims that Yuen “continued to exhibit the behaviors of a stalker obsessed” with Kuehu even after she graduated Punahou and went on to play in college.

Punahou Coach Accused Of Sex Abuse Went On To Other Schools

The women accusing him of sexual assault say Punahou knew about his behavior since 2003. But he’s coached at three other schools and a club team since Punahou.

A former Punahou School assistant girls’ basketball coach accused by three women of sexual assault went on to coach and teach at other Hawaii schools until 2018, even though Punahou allegedly knew about his behavior as early as 2003.

One of the women, a minor at the time, filed a restraining order against Dwayne Yuen in 2006.

But the allegations didn’t stop him from getting jobs at Moanalua High, Kamehameha Schools and Momilani Elementary school. Civil Beat research shows that he taught second grade and coached basketball at Momilani, and coached at Moanalua and Kamehameha.

The women say in their lawsuits that they reported him to Punahou School when they were in their teens, but the school did nothing to protect them. By law, educators and school employees are required to report suspected cases of abuse to the police or state Child Welfare Services. Failure to report is a petty misdemeanor.

“Adults who were in positions to make decisions to protect children failed in their duty to do so and they let this predator be around children,” said Crystal Glendon, an attorney representing Shawna-Lei Kuehu, a local basketball standout who accuses Yuen of grooming her for sex starting in 2004 when she was a freshman in high school.

Three former Punahou School students have accused a former assistant girls basketball coach of sexual abuse. The male coach had previously been accused by two other students.

Punahou President Michael Latham wrote in a letter to the school community that the alleged abuse took place between 2004 and 2005, when the coach no longer worked at the school. Past news reports say the coach worked at the school from 2001 to 2004.

“We are heartbroken by these accounts, and our hearts go out to the survivors,” the president said in the letter.

Latham said the school has reported the new allegations to the Honolulu Police Department and opened up an internal investigation, as well as offered counseling to those who came forward.

“We hold ourselves to the highest ideals and are committed to reckoning with the past and bringing issues out of the shadows so that we can resolve them and provide counseling and support to survivors,” he said.

In 2018, when two former students came forward with allegations, the coach was investigated by the state Department of Education.

Exactly why I'm posting this. Did Obama know something about the 2004-2006 sex abuse that was covered up or did he help cover it up as a Senator w/ friends in high places?

Also Obama attended during the late 70's when Christopher McLaren was molesting kids too. Was Obama molested too? Does that explain his predilection for transgendered and gay people?

After all many gay people I have talked to have undergone some kind of sexual trauma in their life.
