Walter MacFarlane, the father of Walter MacFarlane Jr, proctor at Punahou for decades

Walter James Macfarlane, in whose memory the Outrigger Canoe Club’s 4th of July canoe races are named, loved Hawaii, the Outrigger Canoe Club and all water sports.

On June 4, 1943, members and directors of the OCC were stunned by the news that Macfarlane, a Territorial legislator and businessman, had passed away in Oakland, California.

Walter “Mac” as he was known by his many friends was president of the Outrigger Canoe Club at the time of his death. He had been elected in 1937 when the Club was facing a number of problems: the treasury was practically non-existent, the lease on the grounds owned by the Queen Emma Estate where the Club was located was about to expire; and the buildings were obsolete and unfit to continue in, and needed rebuilding.

Walter “Mac” had an indomitable and courageous outlook with a determination and an optimism that a plan to finance new buildings and build a new Club on modern lines could be carried out.

A committee was formed with the directors and other members and a formula for the successful continuation of the Club was blueprinted. Many members dropped out due to the financial uncertainty. Walter “Mac” stayed on and with a small group of supporters devoted every ounce of his energy and most of his time, finally succeeding in selling bonds and raising the capital to build the Club at Waikiki Beach. The new Club finally opened in 1941 and was well on its way to success when he passed away.

Walter “Mac” was born in Honolulu on September 5, 1907, the son of a kama`aina family. He was the grandson of James and Abigail Campbell, founder of the Campbell Estate, and the son of entrepreneur and polo player F. Walter Macfarlane Sr. and composer Alice Kamokila Campbell. He was the nephew of royal descendent Abigail Kawananakoa.

He attended Punahou School where he was prominent in athletics; later prep school at Palo Alto, graduating from the University of Hawaii where he was a member of the football team. He was vice-president of the advertising firm, Bowman, Holst, Macfarlane and Richardson, and a member of the Territorial Legislature being elected to terms in 1935, 1937 and 1939. He took particular interest in those problems concerning Hawaiians and served on committees of the Legislature whose object was to improve their condition.

From 1939-1941 Walter Mac and his OCC Board of Directors were busy raising funds, designing the buildings and constructing the new Outrigger Canoe Club on Waikiki Beach to replace the old termite-eaten buildings. The dedication and opening of the new Club coincided with Kamehameha Day in 1941 so the Club sponsored a highly successful program of aquatic activities that included a few canoe races.

Walter Mac got married on December 1, 1941 in Las Vegas, and was on his honeymoon on the Mainland when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He left his bride with her parents in Mexico City, and returned to Hawaii. With Hawaii at war, there were no ocean sports in 1942, and with the Club operating well and the war going well for the Allies, Walter Mac, still our president, went to visit his wife in early 1943. He came down with typhoid fever while he was on the trip and died on June 4, 1943 in California at age 36.

Memorial services were held at the Club on June 6. The Rev. Henry P. Judd delivered the eulogy, saying “This young man, who always had a smile for everyone, will never leave us. Every bit of bamboo, every surfboard, every canoe and every person here will be living memorials of his sportsmanship and good fellowship.”

At the time of his death, the Club was planning to celebrate the second anniversary of its new Clubhouse on Kamehameha Day, June 11, 1944, with an aquatic carnival. In respect for Macfarlane, Club manager Henry deGorog, suggested the Kamehameha Day celebration be postponed several weeks until the 4th of July and be renamed to honor our late president.

Father of world champ MMA fighter fired following her sexual abuse claims against Punahou School

After 38-years as a teacher, coach, and SAT Proctor at Punahou School, Walter MacFarlane was fired Friday.

KITV4 learned MacFarlane himself found out via text message.

As an athlete, he's in the Buff 'n Blue Hall of Fame. Recently, two of his daughters Mahina and World Champion Bellator fighter Ilima-Lei filed sexual abuse claims against Punahou, a former assistant basketball coach, and a long list of faculty members.

Friday afternoon, KITV4 obtained this statement from MacFarlane:

"Today I was informed directly by Punahou School that I was no longer welcome to continue my work with student testing classes…There was no misunderstanding as to what I was told. I was told in no uncertain terms that I can't work there anymore. My daughters were courageous in coming forward after they were sexually abused at Punahou School, and now Punahou School is coming after me. This is very sad."

At least six such cases have been filed against Punahou, and long-time administrator Kale Ane is accused of "knowing about the incidents."

Friday, Ane was removed as the school's head football coach after 22 years, and placed on paid leave. He's an alum who played seven seasons as a center in the National Football League with the Chiefs and Packers.

Former UH receiver Leonard Lau has been been promoted from assistant coach for the past five years to interim head coach.

Punahou released this statement regarding their two-time state champion coach:

"To preserve the integrity of the independent investigation into allegations at Punahou, all current employees identified in the complaints will be taking leave with pay. Our employees are not named as defendants in the complaints. They do, however, recognize the need for the process to be completed in the most forthright and objective way possible. Punahou supports their decisions and looks forward to a full and fair investigation of the facts."

Ilima-Lei Macfarlane accuses school of retaliation after sex abuse lawsuit

Last month Bellator flyweight champion Ilima-Lei Macfarlane and two other women filed a lawsuit against Dwayne Yuen, a former basketball coach at Punahou School in Honolulu, HI.

Macfarlane, who attended Punahou as a kindergartner and graduated in 2009, claimed that Yuen groomed her and her sister when they were 12 and 14-years old, offered cash for sex acts and sent explicit photos of himself. In the lawsuit a third former Punahou student accused Yuen of sexual abuse.

Macfarlane’s lawsuit also accuses a number of school administrators of knowing about the alleged abuse and failing to protect students.

Over the weekend KITV4 reported that Macfarlane’s father, Walter Macfarlane — who had spent 38-years as a teacher, coach and SAT proctor at Punahou school — had been fired.

Walter Macfarlane, who said he learned he was fired via text message, released a statement to KITV4.

“Today I was informed directly by Punahou School that I was no longer welcome to continue my work with student testing classes…There was no misunderstanding as to what I was told. I was told in no uncertain terms that I can’t work there anymore. My daughters were courageous in coming forward after they were sexually abused at Punahou School, and now Punahou School is coming after me. This is very sad.”

Punahou also released a statement regarding Walter Macfarlane’s firing.

“To preserve the integrity of the independent investigation into allegations at Punahou, all current employees identified in the complaints will be taking leave with pay. Our employees are not named as defendants in the complaints. They do, however, recognize the need for the process to be completed in the most forthright and objective way possible. Punahou supports their decisions and looks forward to a full and fair investigation of the facts.”

Macfarlane told Hawaii News Now that her father’s firing was retaliation for the lawsuit. “For them to fire him today basically through a text message was pretty just, OK, now we see how they feel about the survivors.”

“Dwayne Yuen, you messed with the wrong group of girls and now we are all strong women. Your time is up,” added Macfarlane.

One of the other plaintiffs spoke to HNN about Punahou’s decision to keep employees named in the lawsuit on the payroll.

“Punahou’s decision to allow certain administrators, faculty and staff with knowledge of sex abuse problems to remain employed is disappointing,” she said. “It is devastating to see administrators responsible for these sex abuse problems receiving protection and financial support from the school.”

Punahou claims they are investigating the accusations against Yuen and have promised ‘transparency and elevated standards’ while the lawsuit proceeds.

Obama's School Punahou was filled with sex abusers even back in the late 70's when he attended

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Days after two standout athletes filed lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct by a former basketball coach, Punahou School is reporting more sex assault allegations that have recently come to light.

The school sent out an email Sunday, saying this time, the allegations involve a former faculty member and baseball coach.

Both cases happened in the 1970s, the school said, and have been reported to police.

“As we now proceed to reckon with the past and our responsibilities, we pledge our respect and support for these courageous members of our Punahou ohana,” the school wrote in the email.

The new allegations come after several former players — including MMA champ Ilima-Lei Macfarlane and Shawna-Lei Kuehu — filed sex abuse lawsuits against former basketball coach Dwayne Yuen and the school.

Kuehu is widely regarded as one of the best high school players in Hawaii's history.

She and an unnamed woman accuse Yuen of predatory behavior and sex abuse between 2003 and 2008.

Macfarlane’s suit alleges similar claims.
