I remember the news report stated where it crashed was the farthest point from land anywhere in the world's oceans. The context was "wow how lucky that it crashed in the best possible place."

So if we brought it down, it could have been timed as a message as you suggest. Or just, you know, that we can make it fall wherever we WANT. Either way, its a message.
