woah, hivemind moment! almost made a post pre-answering your questions moments ago, had the idea to share my recipe for capping, just in case…

one of the reasons why the edited maps don't go completely far back in time isn't that i was around or didn't cap, but mostly that mine were by single posts, and the maps were taken care of.

at some point it stopped, and i thought that was a shame because i loved those, they were one of if not my favorite way to re-read crumbs. anyway, got back into it - glad that there's the other set of maps still going on, though, good to have multiples, and that one i see as more "raw", whereas this set is more edited. Complimentary.

ok so capping 101: ZOOM IN.

if it's the only thing you do, it'll already be something.

What i do is i go to 150%, and go out of fullscreen to get a column (important for line separation when there isn't any and you get one very, very, very long line).

I gather the raw caps, then open in copied files in photoshop, i chose the standard 1111 to have the caps bigger, but it'd probably be simpler to stick to the original size, and resize later.

Oh, size issue: usually i go for png, but for the maps it gets too big, hence jpg. I stumbled on 5555*5555 as a dimension where i could generally save the full map at (11highquality) for better resolution and still being able to post.

Having problems filling up the map too fast, i got into squeezing blank space: i don't use the caps raw anymore. I've my "measurements"/habits of sizing, so when there's 3 or 4 anon posts in the chain Q replies to, they take up less space. Or when there's pics, etc.

That's another thing, my rule is i have to include the full chain. Often not all comments are worth it, but since they're linked, and the idea is that the map stands on its own, i feel it has to be there.

I've never heard of any anon complaining about the editing, which could be an issue: i'm cheating! removing replies and doing all sorts of things! heresy! But hey, i'm just an anon doing it to pitch in and wouldn't dare mess anything up. And the beauty of our multiplied capping and archives is that i couldn't cheat that way even if i was a shill…

So yeah, i do the vertical column day-by-day cap first, and then i open that in another file to resize it into the map and make the jpg.

ok, sorry for blathering, maybe not as informative, but i hope helpful somehow… a few years back photoshop put out a free, complete, downloadable version of their software. It's not the latest but works fine, and is virusfree and should be duckducked without too much trouble, i guess.

*addendum, working with a standard files helps having the same size in the end, allowing to resize if needed or unvoluntary differently sized caps to work with

ah there we go, knew it, i was already replying…

didn't say much about that: do you need more technical pointers? i use the basic rectangular select tool, get the top of the cap, holding ctrl (or ctrl+alt? it's mechanical and quite late now so not sure), nudge a few clicks down, repeat.

but then you get better at it and you do it more and more :P …solves anons using reddit spacing or caps in caps that have useless blank space.

for layout, it depends how you cap: if you have it more horizontal, you'll want to go that way… again, it's to squeeze more into less space, i fell into this column system: going out of fullscreen in browser, it resizes automatically. I'm generally at a third of the screen, depending on the length of lines posted.

not seeing it's hard to say, to i'd say play around a bit, see what works best with what you have/plan to do…

for separation, either placement can do it, or you could underline his ID(s)… one thing i did sometimes is either go full black&white for non-Q posters or going "fancy" and taking out say 50% of the color, so it's visibly different and stands apart.

Using layers in photoshop for the layout, editing, etc. Same for GIMP, but i never got used to it, it's not really a question of the program anyway.

blush/nah, just another anon, like you - glad to be of service…

>not seeing it's hard to say, to i'd say play around a bit

of course is meant to be

>not seeing it's hard to say, *so i'd say play around a bit

-forgot color for separation, you could color-code the anons in the conversation…

also fell into columns because Q's generally using short sentences. But then we he doesn't, that's when having pre-sized your screen before the cap helps.

And zooming in. It all helps having the text as big and readable as possible without using up too much space/files

she jokes about sacrifing chickens in emails, so i wouldn't be surprised she'd go for something much, much more sinister in the comfort of Jeff's island…
