the staff sargent was this brillient guy and he ran the group of Airmen who did all the work, it wsan't grunt work, but highend fabrication . . . and very technical expert . . . stuff.

in any case why didn't this brilliant airman get farther than senior staff sargent?

Alcohol? perhaps part of it.
