We knew that at BigCompany too.
Cynically, other employees called it "manage your manager".
It means, give your manager the info you want them to have.
You want your manager to see you in a favorable light and to make decisions you can use to further your career.
You want your manager to give you a good review and salary increases so you give them info that will cause them to see you favorably.
It's "human nature" and it's a kind of "perverse incentive" that causes normal people to gradually become warped.
Glad I left BigCompany so long ago. Gained some insights into human nature there.
