Michelle Goldberg became an Op-Ed columnist for The New York Times in 2017. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and children.

Hawaii Legalizes Assisted Suicide

Hawaii on Thursday legalized medically assisted suicide as Gov. David Ige signed a bill letting doctors help terminally ill patients kill themselves.

“It is time for terminally ill, mentally competent Hawaii residents who are suffering to make their own end-of-life choices with dignity, grace and peace,” Ige said. He added that under the new law, the patient is in full control of his or her fate.

"We know that we have gotten to a point in our community that it does make sense to give the patient a choice to request the medication, obtain it and take it, or ultimately change their mind,” the governor said.

Poll: More Americans Against Hogg's Boycott Of Ingraham Than For It

So how do Americans feel about Parkland gun control activist David Hogg's call to launch a boycott of Laura Ingraham's advertisers because she poked fun of him for getting rejected by some colleges? According to a new Economist/YouGov poll, a plurality think it's out of line.

YouGov's new poll found that 40% of respondents overall think Hogg's call for a boycott is "inappropriate," while 34% think it's "appropriate." More than a quarter (27%) are "not sure."

Republicans overwhelmingly disagree with it: 65% says it's inappropriate, while just 18% think it's okay; 16% are ambivalent. While a slim majority (54%) of Democrats think it's appropriate, 19% don't agree with it and another 27% are unsure.

Poisoned Russian spy Sergei Skripal survives nerve agent attack

Russian double agent Sergei Skripal has survived an assassination attempt by poisoning and is “improving rapidly,” according to the hospital treating him. Skripal’s daughter, Yulia, is also said to be on her way to recovery after she, too, was poisoned.

Skripal and his daughter have been hospitalized for about a month after they were found slumped on a bench in a catatonic state in the English town of Salisbury in early March. The nerve agent used to poison them is called novichok. A scientist who helped develop the toxin told VICE News that it is "at least 10 times stronger than any known toxic substance in the world” and that he believed Vladimir Putin likely ordered the attack.
