I've delved into a couple of large studies and noticed in both that obesity is the #1 risk factor (after age, of course) in those who die. More correlated than diabetes in both studies.

Generally, but not always, insulin-depended diabetics are overweight. Does your wife know if most who died were also very overweight?

The ones who are "morbidly obese" (100lbs over ideal body weight or BMI >/=40) fare the worst.

For some reason this isn't being reported and it should be!
