ok this ANITA balloon satellite has been the source of many science stories coming from antartica over the years. they claim it keeps detecting types of neutrinos. and this story keeps getting rehashed year after year. the newest rendition is discovery of a parallel universe. this latest phenomenon was actually discovered in 2018, but they just now came up with the "parallel universe" explanation.

What i dont get is how they can even detect neutrinos in the atmosphere with a relatively tiny detector hanging from a balloon. neutrinos are basically massless and move at the speed of light right through matter without interacting with it most of the time. they are very hard to detect. even if a neutrino were to pass through the detector on this satellite, it would be impossible to observe because of all the backround radiation.

last pic related is a massive underground neutrino detector. they put it underground to prevent other radiation interference in the experiment. the 1000s of sensitive light detectors on the walls see the tiny neutrino reactions in millions of gallons of distilled water in pure darkness as they pass through. these detectors only see a hand full of neutrinos each year, thats how difficult they are to detect. and the experiment itself is a herculean effort.

i would like to know just how the hell these scientists are making discoveries of a tiny, nearly massless particle by putting a detector into a high radiation/EM environment such as the south pole.
