Ford says Trump will be required to wear a mask in its Ypsilanti plant on Thursday — something he hasn’t done on other recent plant tours.

"Our policy is that everyone wears PPE to prevent the spread of COVID-19," Ford spokeswoman Rachel McCleery said.

When Ford Motor Co. hosts President Donald Trump on Thursday for a tour of its Rawsonville Components Plant in Ypsilanti, the automaker will be doing so in technical violation of an executive order from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer prohibiting "nonessential" plant tours. Her office signaled it would not stand in the way of the visit.

Ford says it will require the president to wear a mask, something he has not done on other recent plant tours.

Whitmer's new coronavirus pandemic workplace regulations for businesses laid out in Executive Order No. 2020-91 states that "manufacturing facilities must … suspend all non-essential in-person visits, including tours."

A spokesman for Whitmer confirmed Tuesday that this provision applies to Ford, which is hosting the presidential visit Thursday to show Trump its auto parts plant that was quickly converted to assembling ventilators in partnership with GE Healthcare.

But there's no indication the Democratic governor is going to prevent the Republican president from touring the 1.7 million square foot plant, where members of the United Auto Workers union normally produce Ford vehicle parts for transmissions, fuel pumps, air induction systems, ignitions and batteries.

"Ford and the UAW are doing incredible work for the country, and their ingenuity will save lives," Whitmer spokesman Zack Pohl said in an email to Crain's. "While the president's visit is contrary to the governor's order, this is an opportunity to showcase how important Michigan is to the response to COVID-19 and rebuilding our nation's economy."

A Ford spokeswoman indicated Tuesday that the president will have to wear a mask while touring the Ypsilanti plant as required by company policy.

"Our policy is that everyone wears PPE to prevent the spread of COVID-19," Ford spokeswoman Rachel McCleery said. "We shared all of Ford's safety protocols, including our manufacturing playbook, employee pamphlet and self-assessment survey with the White House ahead of time and in preparation for this trip."

Trump did not wear a mask last Thursday when he toured a Owens & Minor Inc. medical equipment distribution center in Allentown, Pa. He also didn't wear a mask when he toured a Honeywell International Inc. mask factory in Phoenix, Arizona, according to published reports.

McCleery deferred to the governor's office for interpretation of her executive order.

The governor's ban on plant tours is not new.

Whitmer included it in a May 7 order (Executive Order No. 2020-77) allowing the state's construction industry to restart. In rescinding that order Monday, the governor wrote in a new order that "I find it reasonable and necessary to reaffirm the measures set forth in Executive Order 2020-77."

Ford and GE have set a goal of manufacturing 50,000 ventilators by mid-July in response to a need to help replenish the nation's stockpile of life-saving ventilators.

The Dearborn-based automaker said Sunday in a statement that Trump will visit the 64-year-old parts plant "as part of the president's tour to thank businesses producing PPE and important medical equipment."

"We're proud to assemble more vehicles in the U.S. than any other automaker and welcome Thursday's visit as part of Ford's longstanding history of hosting sitting presidents and senior government leaders," the company said in a statement.

Whitmer's office said Monday that the White House had not invited her to attend Thursday's event and that the governor is planning to volunteer at a school that day distributing meals to children and their families.

Not enough people are talking about the fact that billionaire Sheldon Adelson has been working with the CIA and MOS for many years.

For better or worse, he has played an integral part in this movie.

FDA Suspends Coronavirus Testing Program Backed By Bill Gates

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has indefinitely suspended a coronavirus testing program that has been highly praised by billionaire Bill Gates.

The Seattle Coronavirus Assessment Network (SCAN), in part backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, had been testing about 300 people per day before the FDA shut down the program, according to Reuters. The program allowed Seattle residents to swab themselves in a test and send the nasal samples to a lab.

In a statement posted to its website, SCAN said officials for the program are working with FDA regulators to resume the program.

“The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) recently clarified its guidance for home-based, self-collected samples to test for COVID-19. We have been notified that a separate federal emergency use authorization (EUA) is required to return results for self-collected tests. The FDA has not raised any concerns regarding the safety and accuracy of SCAN’s test, but we have been asked to pause testing until we receive that additional authorization,” the statement said.

We have been in conversation with the FDA since March 1st and hope to have our EUA soon. We initiated the process to authorize our lab-developed test and self-swab kit on March 23rd and, in accordance with the EUA process and timeline, submitted data to secure federal authorization on April 13th. We are actively working to address their questions and resume testing as soon as possible.

We are pleased to see the FDA’s recent clarifications regarding provisions for home-based self-collection of diagnostic samples in specific circumstances. This paves the way toward expanding access to safe, reliable, convenient, and scalable testing options across the country.

We are grateful for productive partnerships with the FDA, the Washington State Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as we continue to respond to this unprecedented and rapidly evolving outbreak.

In March, the Gates Foundation announced it would provide technical assistance for SCAN. In addition, a vaccine trial by Inovio was able to produce thousands of doses “in part thanks to backing from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, as well as funding from other nonprofits and organizations.”
