If you have never experienced a 'cicada year' lemme explain it to you.

They emerge and make a particular sound, millions of them, ALL day, ALL night, like a high-pitched buzz, for months. The sound gets in your head and, if you are not in an inner city, there is no where you find respite. All the doors and windows closed, it still pierces through. And just about the time when you are about to love your fucking mind… all the sudden.. it stops. It stops on a dime. They all stop at the same time and then it is blessed silence.

And then you realize how loud the silence is –almost as deafening as the cicadas themselves. You don't hear the birds for a while and then you start to notice them.

Blessed relief.
