Chinese state media labels Australia ‘the dog of the United States’

China has branded Australia as looking like a “giant kangaroo that acts as the dog of the US” in the latest exchange of bizarre insults.

China has branded Australia as looking like a “giant kangaroo that acts as the dog of the US” in the latest exchange of bizarre insults over escalating trade tensions.

Amid fresh speculation that China could be preparing a “hit list” of Australian exports including wine and dairy, the war of words has escalated after barley exporters were hit with punitive tariffs this week.

Stung by claims that international pressure forced China to back an inquiry into the origins of the coronavirus, Communist officials have gone on the offensive, insisting that the final probe agreed to was completely different from the independent probe Australia had sought.

Now the Global Times newspaper, widely regarded as the mouthpiece of the Chinese Government has escalated the war of words quoting anonymous “Nietzens” or citizens of the internet comparing Australia to “dog” of the US President Donald Trump.

“Some Chinese netizens also mocked Australia’s attempts as it has been trying to become a ‘martyr’ for defending so-called independence and transparency while its ideas were denounced by the global community,’’ it said.

“By following the steps of some US hawks who harshly attack China over coronavirus, ‘it seems that Australia, this giant kangaroo that serves as a dog of the US, will hit a deadlock with China on trade disputes in sectors like coal and beef. Hopefully, the US will compensate it!’ one netizen said in a Weibo post on Tuesday.”

Unsealed Warrant Reveals Canadian Nova Scotia Police Knew About Gunman Hours Before Tragedy

On 18 and 19 April, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia saw a deadly mass shooting carried out by a 51-year-old dentist named Gabriel Wortman, who killed 22 people, including a federal police officer. The shooter was later killed by police.

A recently unsealed warrant revealed on Tuesday that the Nova Scotia Police became aware of the fact that a gunman with several firearms was driving a fake police car in the province 12 hours before they warned the public.

Police killed the gunman, but not until he had murdered 22 people during his 18-19 April killing spree.

The 40-page warrant, part of which is redacted, revealed that the shooter's neighbours informed police that the 51-year-old posed a threat before he started his horrific massacre.

“[The shooter] wasn’t a police officer wannabe and didn’t like police officers and thought he was better than them,” the supsect's partner, who suffered a severe beating and was handcuffed by the shooter before she was able to escape on the evening of 18 April, told police, according to the document.

The woman narrated that she saw him that day putting a number of firearms inside a car that was modified to look like a Royal Canadian Mounted Police cruiser.

The warrant also stated that a neighbour told police at the scene of the first shooting in Portapique on the night of 18 April that he was shot by a man he identified as Wortman. He also said that the suspect was dressed as a police officer and was driving a “police vehicle”.

Despite being aware of the information, the Nova Scotia police did not warn the public until the morning of the next day, according to The Guardian.

Classified Leak Against Michael Flynn Didn’t Come From An ‘Unmasking’ Request, Analysis Suggests

A leak of details of Michael Flynn’s phone call with a Russian diplomat likely did not originate from an “unmasking” request, according to two former U.S. law enforcement officials.

Andrew McCabe, the former deputy director of the FBI, also explained in his book and congressional testimony that Flynn’s identity was not masked in intelligence reports of phone calls he had with Sergey Kislyak.

A Washington Post columnist published a story in early 2017 based on a leak of classified information regarding the Flynn-Kislyak phone call.

A list of Obama-era officials who made unmasking requests for Flynn failed to address who obtained information about the call.

A leak of classified information to the media regarding Michael Flynn’s phone calls in late 2016 with a Russian diplomat was likely not derived from a so-called “unmasking” request, according to analysis from two former U.S. law enforcement officials, and a review of newly released government documents.

Republicans have for over three years suggested that requests that Obama administration officials made for information on Flynn during the presidential transition period were somehow tied to the leak provided to The Washington Post for a Jan. 12, 2017, story about Flynn’s phone calls with Sergey Kislyak, a Russian diplomat.

Post columnist David Ignatius reported that a “senior U.S. government official” said Flynn spoke by phone with Kislyak, the then-Russian ambassador, about U.S. sanctions against Russia.

The story touched off of a series of events that eventually led to charges against Flynn for making false statements to the FBI. The Justice Department filed a motion to toss out the case, citing evidence that the FBI withheld information from Flynn’s lawyers. Attorney General William Barr defended Flynn’s call with Kislyak in a May 8 interview as “laudable” and said the former national security adviser was the target of an FBI “perjury trap.”

Republicans upset at the leak of the Flynn story to the Post have pushed for the declassification of a list of Obama-era officials who submitted requests for intelligence reports regarding Flynn. One hope was that the list of “unmasking” requests might shed light on which Obama administration official was behind the leak to the Post, or at least narrow down a list of possible culprits.

But those hopes were dashed May 13 with the release of the list, which included the names of 39 government officials, including Joe Biden, James Clapper and James Comey. The timeline of the unmasking requests did not match up with the date of Flynn’s phone call with Kislyak — Dec. 29, 2016.

Clapper, who served as director of national intelligence, made a request a day earlier, on Dec. 28, 2016. The next request was not made until White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough did so on Jan. 5, 2017. Government officials were discussing Flynn’s call with Kislyak between the dates of the Clapper and McDonough requests, suggesting that Flynn was identified in a report that did not require his identity to be unveiled.
