KING COUNTY, Wash. — The very item meant to keep people safe during the pandemic is now giving thieves the perfect cover.

The King County Sheriff’s Office says more crimes are being committed by people wearing face masks. While it may have been a red flag before the pandemic, face covering inside businesses are the “new normal,” and Sgt. Ryan Abbott says criminals are taking advantage.

“We’re starting to see the same trend with almost any type of crime you could think of,” he said, “because now people can wear masks everywhere and they're not looked at strangely.

The Centers for Disease Control updated their Coronavirus information page this week; clarifying that it does not appear the disease is easily spread via “contaminated surfaces” like stainless steel and fabric.

“For those of you still wiping down groceries and other packages amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, breathe a sigh of relief: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now say that the novel virus ‘does not spread easily’ from touching contaminated surfaces or objects — but experts warn that doesn’t mean it’s no longer necessary to take precautions in stopping the spread of COVID-19,” reports Fox News.

“COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning about how it spreads. It may be possible for COVID-19 to spread in other ways, but these are not thought to be the main ways the virus spreads,” according to the CDC.

The CDC believes the virus is primarily spread through prolonged personal contact, primarily within six feet of an infected individual.
