KING COUNTY—Masks have become the perfect cover for thieves in the Covid-19 pandemic.
An 88-year-old grandma was targeted by two masked criminals trying to break into her home this morning in Skyway.
King County Sheriff Deputies say it’s part of a troubling trend where criminals are taking advantage of directives to wear masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 88-year-old grandma showed KOMO News where she hid in her closet as she called 911 for help, terrified.
She can be heard on a 911 call released by the King County Sheriff’s Office saying, “Somebody is in my backyard. Somebody ring the doorbell. Two young men and I am live alone.”
Deputies say two masked men used a rock to smash her door window.
Deputies say this is just one of many crimes being committed by criminals taking advantage of directives to wear masks in our area and around the country.
Last week in Auburn, deputies say two masked thieves were caught on surveillance camera stealing a rifle and a Mercedes.
Pierce County Sheriff deputies said they’ve seen the problem there too where thieves and robbers are taking advantage of masks to target homes and businesses.
“This is the first time you can go into a bank and wear a mask and you’re not looked at like you’re going to rob the place,” said Sgt. Ryan Abbott from the King County Sheriff’s Office. “We’ve seen every type of crime you can think of and now they’re wearing masks all the time. Where before, you would see it on certain ones because it draws people’s attention if you’re wearing a mask out in public and now it does not, now it’s just a common thing.”
