Second fighter jet crashes at Florida Air Force base in days

What’s going on at Elgin AFB?

The F-35 crash comes after an F-22 fighter jet crashed Friday at Eglin's test and training range, about 12 miles northeast of the main base. The pilot in that accident also safely ejected, was taken to a base hospital and was in stable condition.

Tuesday night's crash is also the second ever for an F-35, the military's most advanced jet, in the United States. In September 2018, a Marine Corps F-35B crashed near Beaufort, S.C. The pilot was also able to eject in that case. A Government Accountability Office investigation determined the cause of the crash was a manufacturing defect in a fuel tube.
