'Mass casualty incident': Over 600 doctors sign letter warning Trump of dangers of continued lockdowns

One of the doctors named in the letter, Dr. Mark McDonald, told Fox News that the indirect effects of the shutdown outweigh the direct consequences that would follow if the shutdowns were lifted.

"The very initial argument … which sounded reasonable three months ago, is that in order to limit the overwhelmed patient flux into hospitals that would prevent adequate care, we needed to spread out the infections and thus the deaths in specific locales that could become hot spots, particularly New York City … It was a valid argument at the beginning based on the models that were given," McDonald said. "What we've seen now over the last three months is that no city — none, zero — outside of New York has even been significantly stressed."

McDonald added that hospitals are currently not overwhelmed by coronavirus patients, and, in fact, some are even being shut down.

GOP congressman and doctor says he's been taking hydroxychloroquine to fend off COVID

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Republican congressman from Kansas who is also a doctor says he has been taking a malaria drug being touted by President Donald Trump as way to protect against the coronavirus, despite warnings that it could have potentially fatal side effects.

U.S. Rep. Roger Marshall, who is running for the U.S. Senate, said he doesn’t have COVID-19 but is taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventative drug. His parents, siblings and wife also are taking the drug, a spokesman for Marshall told The Kansas City Star on Tuesday.

“I would encourage any person over the age of 65 or with an underlying medical condition to talk to their own physician about taking hydroxychloroquine and I’m relieved President Trump is taking it,” Marshall told The Wall Street Journal, which first reported the congressman’s use of the drug.

Senate authorizes subpoena in Hunter Biden probe

The Senate’s primary oversight committee on Wednesday voted to issue its first subpoena in an investigation of Ukrainian business deals involving Hunter Biden, the son of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joseph R. Biden.

The 8-6 party-line vote in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee gave Chairman Ron Johnson, Wisconsin Republican, the authority to subpoena Blue Star Strategies, a PR firm that has done work for the Ukrainian energy company Burisma.

Mr. Johnson said if there’s no wrongdoing there’s nothing Democrats should fear in moving forward with a probe of Burisma, where Hunter Biden landed a lucrative job, despite never having worked in the energy sector, while his father led Obama administration efforts in graft-riddled Ukraine.
