You know, your post reminds me of a lesson I learned from a writer's group:
You circle the pond with the other fish until you figure out that to become a good writer, you have to swim upstream on your own. Whether you get paid for your struggle is another question, but if you're only writing to get paid, your struggle was all for naught anyway and you might as well go back to circling the pond with the other fish.
