Threat to the pulp timber (paper) industry.
Funny aside. You might not know that Black Currants are native to North America because they were annihilated to save an imported tree.
The lumber industry brought in fast growing trees from overseas for replanting their clear cuts. As it turns out theses trees were susceptible to a blight. It was discovered that the blight required the presence of the Ribus Genus plant in the area to act as a vector for the blight.
The forestry industry successfully lobbied our government to have a native plant targeted for extermination so their "better, faster, cheaper" imports wouldn't get sick.
