Ukraine is investigating alleged Biden phone call on removal of prosecutor

Ukraine's government is reportedly investigating the release of audio recordings that purport to contain a conversation between Ukraine's former president and former Vice President Joe Biden

The recordings, released by a Ukrainian lawmaker this week, have not yet been verified and reportedly do not contain any references to wrongdoing on Biden's part. Their release comes amid an investigation targeting allies of the former Ukrainian president, The Associated Press reported.

“They governed the country in such a way that they could face many twists and convictions," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said of his predecessor, Petro Poroshenko, who is purported to be one of the voices on the tape. Zelensky has repeatedly accused him of corruption.

One analyst told the AP that the recordings did not appear to contain any damaging information or suggestions of wrongdoing.

The company is reportedly not mentioned in the recordings.

Instead, the person identified as Poroshenko on the tapes is heard discussing the removal of the prosecutor, which he says in the recording was done to secure financial aid from the U.S.

“There is nothing super sensational in these conversations. Where is the dirt on Biden? Where is the reference to Burisma?” Volodymyr Fesenko, head of the Ukrainian-based think tank Penta, told the AP.

“None of it is there. Instead these are conversations between a dependent foreign politician and his boss, which is a sad but natural reality for us here, but is unlikely to impress the Americans," he added.

Poroshenko said in a statement posted to Facebook that the recordings were falsified and part of a Russian-backed effort to "undermine bipartisan support of Ukraine in the United States.” The former Ukrainian leader called Biden a "friend" and "ally" of Ukraine and criticized Zelensky.

The Biden campaign declined to comment to the AP.

Fed Balance Sheet Rises Above $7 Trillion; Bond ETF Holdings Hit $1.8 Billion

After crossing back above the $4 trillion mark back in October 2019 in the aftermath of the JPMorgan repo bailout, also known as "No QE", the Fed's balance sheet is nearly double that amount a little over half a year later, with the Fed reporting in its latest H.4.1 report that as of May 20, 2020, its total assets rose above $7 trillion for the first time ever, an increase of $103 billion in the past week to $7,038 billion. Putting the increase in context, the Fed's balance sheet hit $6 trillion on April 2.

The increase was mostly the result of a $79BN increase in settled MBS purchases as well as $32BN in Treasury purchases, while there was no change in the Fed's holdings in its commercial paper facility.

While the Fed's balance sheet is broadly expected to hit $12 trillion in the next 12 months, the fact that the expansion has slowed down substantially is a problem, especially after the Fed tapered its daily QE to just $6 billion last week, and JPMorgan expects it to further shrink to just $5 billion per day when the new schedule is published tomorrow.

This is a problem because the Treasury has some $3 trillion in debt issuance to go in the next 6 months, and one war or another, the Fed will have to aggressively ramp up its QE again, which as we discussed over the weekend, may mean another market crash "unexpectedly" happens in the coming weeks to provide cover to the Fed for the next massive QE expansion.

There was one surprise in the latest amount of Fed corporate ETF holdings, which can be found in the "Net portfolio holdings of Commercial Paper Funding Facility II, LLC" line time.

As a reminder, earlier today we laid out a BofA report according to which the Fed would disclose $2.5 billion in total bond ETF holdings, and which assumed that the Fed, which unveiled a total of $305MM in the one full day after the program was launched, would now have a $2.5 billion total in holdings. However, the actual number was notably lower at $1.8 billion, which means that in the past 5 work days, the Fed purchased $1.5 billion in ETFs, or $300MM per day, which appears to be the Fed's now daily purchases of LQD (for those curious, the total assets of LQD are $48 billion).

Incidentally, judging by the sharp jump in LQD pricing, $300MM is more than enough to push this critical - for all future buybacks, not to mention anchor pillar for the US bond market - ETF back to near all-time highs.

And since nobody even jokes anymore that the Fed can one day reverse or even stop these operations, the bigger question is what will the Fed's balance sheet be when it's all said and done, an exercise which Deutsche Bank did earlier this week when it calculated that the maximum potential size of the Fed's balance sheet is $130 trillion and will be hit as soon as the Fed owns… well, everything.

When Joe Biden announced he was opening a foreign policy center at the University of Pennsylvania, the goals for the project were ambitious.

At its founding in 2018, Biden described the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement as "a place where policymakers here and abroad will know they can be in touch with some of the best minds."

The center is one of several organizations Biden founded since leaving the White House in 2017, including the domestic policy-focused Biden Institute at the University of Delaware and the Biden Cancer Initiative, all launched in 2017. All three entities have refused to reveal the sources of their funding, a potential landmine for the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee that raises questions about the influence of individual, corporate, and foreign donations on the presidential candidate.

The lack of transparency has drawn the attention of a watchdog group that is now demanding that the federal government investigate whether foreign money has flowed to the Biden Center in Philadelphia.

Many of Biden's nonprofit entities have served as landing spots for his former—and potentially future—White House aides. The Penn Biden Center, which had a "soft opening" in March 2017 and officially opened its doors in February 2018, has served as a national security council-in-waiting for Biden, employing his top White House foreign policy advisers Colin Kahl, Michael Carpenter, and Jeffrey Prescott.

Asked about its funding, a spokesman for the Biden Center told the Washington Free Beacon that it is "a question for my colleagues at main university." Penn spokesman Stephen MacCarthy did not respond to multiple requests for comment. The Biden campaign declined to comment. The Biden Cancer Initiative, which had $2.1 million in total assets in 2018 before suspending its operations last year, according to its tax records, declined to provide a list of donors. The Biden Institute at the University of Delaware has also declined to reveal its funders.

While the Penn Biden Center has not released information on its donors, foreign funding to the University of Pennsylvania has risen more than threefold since its soft opening, spiking to over $100 million last year from $31 million in 2016, according to Department of Education records. China has been the largest contributor during that time, even as the U.S. federal government and prosecutors have ramped up scrutiny into the Chinese government's influence-buying and espionage operations on American campuses.

Between March 2017 and the end of 2019, the University of Pennsylvania received a total of $61 million in gifts and contracts from China, according to Department of Education records. In the preceding four years, the university received just $19 million from China.

Trump says Fox News isn't doing enough to help Republicans — himself included — win reelection

President Trump complained Thursday that his onetime favorite network, Fox News, isn’t doing enough to help him and other Republicans get reelected.

In tweets posted as he flew to Michigan to tour a Ford factory that has been converted to manufacture medical ventilators, the president stepped up his attacks on Fox News, the conservative cable network owned by Rupert Murdoch.

“Many will disagree, but @FoxNews is doing nothing to help Republicans, and me, get re-elected on November 3rd. Sure, there are some truly GREAT people on Fox, but you also have some real ‘garbage’ littered all over the network, people like Dummy Juan Williams, Schumerite Chris Hahn, Richard Goodstein, Donna Brazile, Niel [sic] Cavuto, and many others,” Trump wrote. “They repeat the worst of the Democrat speaking points, and lies. All of the good is totally nullified, and more. Net Result = BAD! CNN & MSDNC are all in for the Do Nothing Democrats! Fox WAS Great!”

Fox News, which for years had billed itself as “Fair & Balanced,” dropped the slogan in 2017.

The latest outburst targeting Fox News came just days after anchor Neil Cavuto chastised the president over his declaration that he was taking the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine to ward off possible infection from the coronavirus.

Cavuto alluded to studies that found the drug does not help treat or prevent COVID-19 and posed serious health risks, including death.

“If you are in a risky population here, and you are taking this as a preventative treatment to ward off the virus or, in a worst-case scenario, you are dealing with the virus, and you are in this vulnerable population, it will kill you. I cannot stress enough: This will kill you,” Cavuto said hours after Trump revealed he was taking the medication.

Perhaps the easiest way to understand Trump’s frustration with each and every Fox News segment that is not fully supportive of his agenda is to look at who watches the network. According to the Pew Research Center, 93 percent of Fox News viewers who say the network is their main source for political news “identify as Republican or lean to the party,” but just 65 percent of Republicans overall say they trust Fox News over other outlets.

Trump needs to hold on to his base to be reelected, yet a Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday found that by a small margin more Democrats (88 percent) said they planned to support former Vice President Joe Biden on Nov. 3 than Republicans who plan to vote for Trump (87 percent). That may be why the president keeps his eyes glued to Fox News. The poll had Biden leading Trump nationally by a margin of 50 percent to 39 percent.

In a Morning Consult poll released Thursday, 73 percent of respondents agreed that Trump’s social media accounts should be suspended or limited because he is spreading misinformation about COVID-19.

U.S. FDA Names 27 Coronavirus Antibody Tests No Longer Ok to Be Sold

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday identified 27 coronavirus antibody tests that should no longer be sold in the United States, following up on new regulations meant to weed out dubious tests and players that had entered the country under loose rules set in March.

That original policy required vendors only to notify the agency that they intended to sell the tests in the country and to self-certify the tests worked. Reuters reported that the policy had opened the market to fraud and lawmakers had pushed the FDA to change it.

The antibody tests are used to determine if a person has been previously exposed to the new coronavirus and developed antibodies that could prevent reinfection. Federal, state and local governments are deploying these tests to gauge the level of immunity in populations.

Under the abridged rules announced May 4, vendors must apply for emergency FDA authorization for the test within 10 days of the rules change, or within 10 days of notifying FDA of the intent to sell new tests.

The FDA website had previously listed more than 200 companies that intended to sell antibody tests, more than half of which were from China. Some European countries had complained that certain Chinese antibody tests were inaccurate.

The FDA's list of tests no longer allowed on the market includes those from vendors who voluntarily withdrew and those for which there is not a pending request for the emergency use authorization, the agency said. (https://reut.rs/3cRSUYP)

Subsequent to the new guidance, Becton Dickinson and Co suspended distribution of an antibody test they have been distributing since late March in partnership with diagnostics company BioMedomics.

"BioMedomics has completed development of a second generation of the test… [and] intends to submit a new EUA application to FDA once the second-generation test has successfully completed all validation testing," Becton Dickinson said last week in a statement.

Nigerian Lawmakers Accuse Bill Gates of Bribing Them To Pass ‘Compulsory Vaccination’ Bill

Nigerian lawmakers have accused Bill Gates of attempting to bribe them for the “speedy passage” of a controversial new bill that will make vaccinations compulsory.

The proposed legislation has caused widespread controversy in Nigeria and citizens fear the bill takes away their rights and grants authorities excessive power to enforce measures meant to curb the spread of infectious diseases.

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), Nigeria’s opposition party, citing a “human intelligence report,” alleged that Gates offered lawmakers $10 million for the “speedy passage” of the bill.

A Nigerian House of Representatives committee investigating the alleged bribery listened to a statement from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation denying the allegations on Monday.

“The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has recently been made aware of an allegation circulating in certain elements of the Nigerian media that the Foundation was involved in a payment purportedly made to the Nigeria House of Representatives. Any such allegations are entirely false and without merit,” the Gates Foundation’s Nigeria representative, Paulin Basinga, said.

“To be clear, the Foundation has not offered any financial incentives to any member of Nigeria’s legislative branch for the passage of legislation nor has it offered any grants to organizations in Nigeria in connection with the same,” Basinga added.

Breitbart report: The proposed legislation has caused controversy in Nigeria, as citizens fear the bill allows Nigerian authorities excessive power to enforce measures meant to curb the spread of infectious diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and dengue fever.

The bill also calls for “compulsory vaccination.”

On May 11, the Premium Times reported on the bill’s most controversial sections:

Sections 46 and 47 of the Bill provide for compulsory vaccination of children and adults with some specified vaccines. Section 15 of the Bill empowers the DG [Director General of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control] to issue a notice to take over a citizen’s property and declare it an isolation center without the consent and permission of the owner. Section 24 empowers an Enforcement Officer to get an order from a Court [magistrate] to destroy a building where infectious disease occurred.

In 2018, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation agreed to pay off Nigeria’s $76 million polio debt, which the country had acquired to combat its national polio epidemic. The Foundation approved the debt write-off after Nigeria met certain conditions, including the guarantee of “more than 80 percent vaccination coverage in at least one round [of government-mandated vaccination] each year in very high-risk areas” for polio.

Robert F. Kennedy has slammed Gates and his third-world philanthropy, pointing out that Gates, who holds no medical qualifications, has “landed the job of dictating world health policy with no election, no appointment, no oversight and no accountability.”

Palestinians shun CIA after declaring end to security coordination with U.S. and Israel

Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said Washington had been told of the move after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said on Tuesday his administration was no longer committed to agreements with Israel and the United States, including on security coordination.

On cooperation with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, Erekat told reporters in a video call: “It stopped as of the end of the (Palestinian) president’s speech.”

Intelligence cooperation with the CIA continued even after the Palestinians began boycotting U.S. peace efforts led by President Donald Trump in 2017, with the sides working together on heading off violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, where the Palestinian Authority is based.

Abbas has threatened before to end security ties, without following through. Israeli officials say he needs Israel’s support in the face of domestic challenges from the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.

But Erekat said: “Things change and we have decided it is time now to change.”

“Security cooperation with the United States is no more. Security coordination with Israel is no more,” said Erekat. “We are going to maintain public order and the rule of law, alone.”

The U.S. embassy in Jerusalem declined to comment.

Later in the day, a senior Palestinian security official told Reuters that Palestinian forces had begun to pull back from some areas of the West Bank that they had policed in coordination with Israel during the coronavirus crisis.

“In light of the president’s instructions about ceasing security coordination, the Israeli side was notified” of the partial withdrawal.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment and it was not clear how widespread the Palestinian forces’ drawback was.

Palestinians worry that Israel, with the blessing of Washington, could carry out pledges to apply Israeli sovereignty to Jewish settlements and the Jordan Valley in the West Bank, which they see as annexation.

Palestinians seek statehood in the West Bank and Gaza, with East Jerusalem as their capital.
