If they aren't very well-kept, it's easy for insects and rodents to take up residence in pitot tubes, engines, landing gear cavities, and other holes/crevices. Mud daubers, wasps… many different critters look at an idle aircraft and start to call it home.
It's quite possible this plane was not properly checked after several weeks of inactivity, leading to this event.
