Minnesota sex offender sentenced to 27 years for child exploitation crimes

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A southern Minnesota sex offender was sentenced in federal court Thursday to 27 years in prison for traveling to Iowa to have sex with children. This case was investigated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Iowa State Patrol and the Hiawatha (Iowa) Police Department.

Terrance Nordwall, 51, of Faribault, Minnesota, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge C.J. Williams to 324 months in federal prison after a jury found him guilty Oct. 31 of attempted sex trafficking of children, attempted enticement of minors, and travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

The evidence given at trial showed that in March and April of 2019, Nordwall exchanged text messages with a man who he believed was a “pimp” with a 14-year-old girl and a 15-year-old girl available. The man was actually an undercover law enforcement officer. Nordwall agreed to pay $200 for a half hour with the two girls, and he drove to the Cedar Rapids area to engage in sex. When he arrived he was met by authorities.

Nordwall was previously convicted in 2004 in Minnesota of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree, two counts of criminal sexual conduct in the fifth degree, and possession of pornographic work involving minors.

In addition to his federal prison term, the court imposed a special assessment of $300 for the Crime Victims Fund, and a 5-year term of supervised release following completion of his prison term. He must also comply with all sex offender registration and public notification requirements. There is no parole in the federal prison system.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Tremmel.

This investigation was conducted under HSI’s Operation Predator, an international initiative to protect children from sexual predators. Since the launch of Operation Predator in 2003, HSI has arrested more than 25,000 individuals for crimes against children, including the production and distribution of online child exploitation material, traveling overseas for sex with minors, and sex trafficking of children. In fiscal year 2019, more than 3,500 child predators were arrested by HSI special agents under this initiative and more than 1,000 victims identified or rescued.

HSI encourages the public to report suspected child predators and any suspicious activity through its toll-free Tip Line at 1-866-DHS-2-ICE or by completing its online tip form. Both are staffed around the clock by investigators. From outside the U.S. and Canada, callers should dial 802-872-6199. Hearing impaired users can call TTY 802-872-6196. Suspected child sexual exploitation or missing children may be reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, an Operation Predator partner, via its toll-free 24-hour hotline, 1-800-THE-LOST.

Russia: Israeli annexation may lead to escalation in region

PLO Executive Committee Secretary-General Saeb Erekat told the CIA on Thursday the coordination with the agency "stopped as of the end of [Abbas's] speech."

The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank may lead to an escalation of violence in the region.

"Such expansionist moves by Israel may provoke a dangerous wave of violence across the Palestinian territories and de-stabilize the Middle East as a whole," the ministry's press office said in a statement.

"The Russian side has warned its Israeli partners about carrying out unilateral plans that do not adhere to the international framework of Middle-Eastern de-escalation."

According to the ministry, an Israeli annexation of the Jordan Valley and other areas in the West Bank will "undermine the territorial integrity of the West Bank, which is crucial for the sustainability of a future Palestinian states based on the [pre-]1967 borders."

The ministry added it "reiterates Russia's principal position of supporting a comprehensive and sustainable resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through a two-state solution within the given international legal conditions."

Amid rising tensions between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA), Russia called upon "all sides to refrain from any steps that may provoke a new dangerous escalation in the region, hindering the creation of conditions allowing for the re-opening of direct Israeli-Palestinian negotiations.

On Tuesday, PA President Mahmoud Abbas announced the PA "absolved" itself of all agreements signed with Israel and the United States due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz including the annexation in their cabinet agreement.

A bank executive and at least one other passenger have been pulled alive from the wreckage of an Airbus A320 which crashed after an engine failure in Pakistan today with 108 people on board.

Bank of Punjab president Zafar Masood was dragged from the smoking debris of the Pakistan International Airlines flight after it smashed into a residential area in Karachi today.

Pakistani officials said two people had survived the crash while local TV said there were three survivors who had sat at the front of the plane, but the other 105 passengers and crew are believed to have died.

'Thank you so much. God has been merciful,' Mr Masood, the banker who was in seat 1C said, according to officials who spoke to him in hospital after the crash. The other known survivor was named as Muhammad Zubair.

Witnesses said the flight from Lahore had made three failed attempts to land at Jinnah International Airport before ploughing into the Model Colony area of the city on a fourth landing attempt.

The pilot told air traffic control that he had lost both of his engines and a recording has emerged of the captain making a final mayday call before the crash. The Airbus A320-214 model uses a CFM56 engine made by CFM International, a joint venture between US-based General Electric and France's Safran.

A photo of the aircraft on approach also shows that the landing gear is still up and black scorch marks under each engine.

The air traffic control recording starts after the pilot has lready made one failed landing attempt.

Pennsylvania couple indicted for producing and possessing sexually explicit images of minors

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – A married couple from Clearfield, Pennsylvania, have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of production and possession of material depicting the sexual exploitation of a minor, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Pittsburgh and Clearfield Borough Police Department.

The five-count indictment, returned May 19, named Jackson Curtis Martin, III, 44, and Amanda Michelle Downs, 28.

According to the indictment presented to the court, from December 2018, to Sept. 1, 2019, Martin and Downs produced images of a minor female engaged in sexually explicit conduct using materials that were shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce. Further, from Jan. 8, 2019, to Nov. 24, 2019, Martin and Downs possessed images of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, which were produced using prepubescent minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The computer graphic files were shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

The law provides for a maximum sentence of not less than 30 years and up to 80 years in prison, a fine of $1,000,000, or both for Martin, and a maximum sentence of not less than 30 years and up to 40 years in prison, a fine of $750,000, or both for Downs. Under the federal sentencing guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offenses and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendants.

Assistant United States Attorney Maureen Sheehan-Balchon is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government.

An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

US To Launch Massive COVID Vaccine Test, Involves Over 100,000 "Volunteers"

The US is planning a "massive testing effort" that will involve more than 100,000 volunteers and six of the most promising COVID-19 vaccines, sources told Reuters on Friday afternoon.

The scientist in charge said the effort would hopefully narrow down vaccine candidates to one by the end of the year.

The push to fast-track a vaccine is condensing at least "10 years of vaccine development and testing into a matter of months," Reuters said.

Moment of Pakistani Plane Crash Caught on Camera - Video

Hours after the crash, CCTV footage has appeared on the internet allegedly showing the exact moment the passenger plane went down near Jinnah International Airport.

Facebook policing personal messages won’t really save children from abuse, but it WILL bring us closer to 1984

Facebook’s “rebel shareholders” want to review potential risks that a new end-to-end encryption service could allow for increased exploitation of children by sexual predators – but why wait until now to kick up a fuss?

We collectively scratch our heads today in bewilderment at how someone in Victorian times could walk into a chemist and freely buy cocaine, opium and even arsenic over the counter. It’s also madness to think that the most harmful of opiates – horse, smack, junk, H… call it what you like – was unregulated and sold legally in the USA until Congress passed the so-called anti-Heroin Act in 1924.

Similarly, I reckon future historians will look back on today’s society in utter horror at our unregulated approach to the internet. The World Wide Web is the Wild West of our times – it is full of cowboys and we need a digital sheriff to keep us safe.

But Facebook’s “rebel shareholders” are sorely mistaken if they genuinely believe society at large will somehow benefit from their efforts to hamper or curtail Mark Zuckerberg’s plans to introduce end-to-end encryption on all messages.

They now want Facebook to review the potential risks of any“increased sexual exploitation of children” with such a messaging service – a move that follows claims from the ‘Five Eyes’ intelligence network that it would turn the social media giant into a haven for paedophiles.

I don’t buy into the theory that Facebook is “already the main hub for child sex abuse,” as is being alleged. Yes, it’s probably the “most popular” social app for perverts to groom the guileless, but much of the sordid and evil deed – such as the buying and selling of obscene pornographic material and human trafficking – is conducted on the Dark Web.

Also, why would these twisted individuals suddenly switch over to Facebook’s security-improved message service when they’ve already got a few other platforms – as well as countless encrypted message services – to use?

And before anybody starts accusing me of being soft on these sexual predators, you should note I have strongly advocated in the past for the introduction of compulsory chemical castration for them, which you can read here.

So keeping that in mind, I feel what the Facebook shareholders are proposing is nothing short of being self-serving at best, or self-sabotage at worst. And – to quote how Shakespeare eloquently put it in ‘Hamlet’ – Mark Zuckerberg will end up being “hoist with his own petard” if he allows them to get away with this s**t. It’ll blow up in their faces if they allow any competition to stay ahead of the game.

As a young man Winston was a dilettante who early developed a lifelong taste for expensive clothes, imported cigars, old brandy, and the other amenities of “the good life. Although he enjoyed a brief and desultory stint as a newspaper correspondent in his early twenties, he soon decided that he could more readily support the style of life to which he wished to become accustomed by claiming a place for himself at the public trough. At the age of 26 he entered Parliament.

As a politician young Churchill continued his dilettante ways, serving in a number of minor posts and switching from one party to another whenever he thought such a move would further his career. Forced to resign his admiralty post in disgrace, Churchill decided to concentrate his energies on developing his one talent: a gift for theatrical oratory. Spending as much as six weeks preparing for a single speech, he would carefully rehearse every intonation and dramatic pause, carefully practice every gesture and facial expression before a mirror. He became a demagogue of rare ability.

Neither his disgrace as a military bungler nor his subsequent success as a political spellbinder abated his taste for expensive living, however, and in the period between the first and second world wars Churchill habitually lived far beyond his means. Finally in 1938, when he was 64 years old, his creditors prepared to foreclose on him, and he was faced with the prospect of a forced sale of his luxurious country estate.

US Commerce Department Adds Nine Chinese Entities to Economic Blacklist Over Human Rights Abuses

Citing human rights abuses in China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, the United States Department of Commerce has announced its intent to add a total of nine new Chinese entities to an economic black list. A separate department measure called for two dozen Chinese companies "with ties to Weapons of Mass Destruction" to be added to that list.

FBI Director Wray opens internal review into how bureau handled Michael Flynn case

The FBI announced Friday that Director Chris Wray has ordered an internal review of the handling of the bureau’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn, which will include examining whether current FBI employees "engaged in misconduct."

“FBI Director Christopher Wray today ordered the Bureau’s Inspection Division to conduct an after-action review of the Michael Flynn investigation,” the bureau said in a statement.

The review will be handled by the bureau’s Inspection Division, the FBI said. That division is similar to an internal affairs office in a police department.

The bureau said the “after-action review” will have a two-fold purpose: evaluating the FBI’s role in the case and determining whether any “current employees engaged in misconduct,” as well as identifying whether any “improvements” might be warranted to FBI procedures.

“Although the FBI does not have the prosecutorial authority to bring a criminal case, the Inspection Division can and will evaluate whether any current onboard employees engaged in actions that might warrant disciplinary measures,” the FBI said.
