FBI Director Christopher Wray orders internal review of Michael Flynn investigation
FBI Director Christopher Wray ordered an internal review of the handling of the bureau's investigation of former Trump campaign adviser Michael Flynn. The "after-action" investigation, announced Friday, will focus on two areas: rooting out any misconduct by current FBI employees and evaluating the need to change bureau policies. A statement noted that the FBI will evaluate whether disciplinary measures will be necessary for any current employees, although the bureau lacks the prosecutorial authority to bring a criminal case. The statement also said the FBI lacks the ability to take any disciplinary action against former employees.
Flynn pleaded guilty in December 2017 to lying to FBI investigators about his December 2016 conversations with Sergey Kislyak about sanctions and a United Nations resolution on Israel. But Flynn now claims that he was set up by the FBI, and the Justice Department is seeking to drop the case. Last week, the federal judge overseeing the case appointed a retired New York federal judge, John Gleeson, to serve as an amicus curiae to “present arguments in opposition to the government’s Motion to Dismiss" and to address “whether the Court should issue an Order to Show Cause why Mr. Flynn should not be held in criminal contempt for perjury."

Fauci: US 'can't stay locked down'
Dr. Anthony Fauci said he is “totally in favor” of various states reopening if done correctly. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said on Friday that an extended lockdown in the United States could cause “irreparable damage” to the country. “Depending upon the dynamics of the infection in the particular state, city, region, county that you’re in, we certainly want to, in a cautious way, reopening,” he said on CNBC. “We can’t stay locked down for such a considerable period of time that you might do irreparable damage and have unintended consequences, including consequences for health.”
He pointed out that because it is important to reopen and to do so safely, the government issued guidelines about how to go about ending coronavirus restrictions put in place to prevent hospitals from becoming overwhelmed and to prevent more people from dying. “So, we are enthusiastic about reopening,” Fauci said. “And I think we can do it in a pace that would be reasonable and that would get us back as a society from a morale standpoint, as well as the economy. I don’t want people to think that any of us feel that staying locked down for a prolonged period of time is the way to go.” “I’m totally in favor of that if done in the proper way in the appropriate setting,” he added.
The U.S. has had more than 1.5 million cases of the coronavirus since the pandemic began and more than 95,000 deaths. After a period of stay-at-home orders and business closures, states are now starting to reopen.

Kayleigh McEnany accuses White House reporters of wanting houses of worship to remain closed
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany accused reporters of not wanting houses of worship to reopen during a tense moment at Friday's briefing. At the start of the briefing, President Trump announced his intention to label all houses of worship as essential businesses. The press secretary faced a litany of questions about the safety of such an action after he left the briefing room.
"The president has been very clear he wants to see churches reopen in accordance with his guidelines," she answered. "The president would like churches to reopen and do it in accordance with the guidelines." "The president will strongly encourage every governor to allow their churches to reopen, and boy, it's interesting to be in a room that desperately wants to seem to see these churches and houses of worship stay closed," McEnany added a moment later, after being asked how the president would override a governor's orders.
Jeff Mason, a reporter for Reuters, then interjected to rebuke her comment. "Kayleigh, I object to that. I mean, I go to church. I’m dying to go back to church," he said. "The question that we're asking you and would like to have asked the president and Dr. Birx is, 'Is it safe, and if it's not safe, is the president trying to encourage that, or does the president agree with Dr. Birx that people should wait?'" She responded, "Jeff, it is safe to reopen your churches if you do so in accordance with the guidelines." In the briefing, Trump demanded that governors update their social distancing protocols to include the opening of houses of worship by this weekend, adding that if states don't do so, he'd override their authority through executive action to allow the public to attend worship services. It would take litigation to do so, however.

Michigan lawmaker who praised Trump files lawsuit against Whitmer and fellow Democrats who censured her
A Michigan state lawmaker filed a lawsuit against Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and fellow Democrats following her censure over a meeting with President Trump. State Rep. Karen Whitsett sued in federal court Thursday, arguing that her right to free speech was violated and she was defamed, according to MLive.com. Whitsett met with Trump at the White House on April 14, during which she thanked the president for advocating the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine and said it saved her life following her coronavirus diagnosis.
"Had you not brought this to the forefront of the HQ, of being able to put this out here, I wouldn't be here today to even have this conversation," she told Trump about his promotion of the drug. "I just can't say how wonderful it is to see your face, and thank you for everything that you have done," she added. "I did not know that saying thank you had a political line. I did not know that. I thought just saying thank you meant thank you."
Following that meeting, Whitsett says Whitmer sent her a nasty text message. She was unanimously censured by her fellow Democrats. The lawsuit claims the Democratic Party in her state silenced her free speech when they “ousted” her from the party, barred her from holding any position or committee membership, and refused to endorse her in future elections. Whitsett cited an instance where she arranged 388,680 meals to be delivered to her constituents in Detroit, but the Democratic Party leaders refused to allow the Michigan National Guard to help her distribute them.
“It’s probably full of banter and bullcrap," Jonathan Kinloch, the chair of the 13th Congressional District Democratic Party Organization, said when asked for comment about the lawsuit after saying he had not yet read it. Whitsett is seeking an unspecified amount of money for damages along with reimbursement of court and lawyer fees. During a conversation with Trump in a meeting with black leaders in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on Thursday, Whitsett said, “I also took a note from you, and so I actually filed a lawsuit to the governor today as well, so I thought that you would like to know that,” to which Trump responded, “Very good.”
