If the best they had was a "virus" that kills mostly old people with pre-existing conditions, in actuality it really wasn't that bad. I say this of course without knowing the possible long-term effects that this virus could have on cognitive and pulminary ability on survivors. But it wasn't a nuke detination or something more sinster or catastrophic.
