At the MoMa an emotional opening

 

Last night was the opening of Marina Abramovic's retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. On the museum's 6th floor works include sound pieces, videos, installations, photographs, and live re-enactments of past performances from the past 40 years.

 

On the museum's second level Abramovic is staging a performance, The Artist is Present, wherein visitors are welcome to sit with Abramovic for as long as they like, facing her from across a small table, staring into her eyes.

 

Last night participants included performance artists Joan Jonas, Valie Export, Tehching Hsieh, and Abramovic's former partner Ulay. Her sitting with Ulay was extremely emotional and was the only time Abramovic reached across the table to touch the sitter.

 

I waited for over an hour for a chance to sit with the artist and can only say that it is an opportunity of a lifetime. The Artist is Present will be performed during museum hours through May 31st.
