I supervised and mentored Mae Podesta for several years as she moved

> Health Access Initiative (CHAI).

I next assigned her to Ethiopia with one other associate, where they

> provided the leadership and energy to establish what rapidly became CHAI’s

> largest and most successful country program. From two young volunteers,

> the program grew to more than 100 employees in about a year.

As a measure of Mae’s impact, when I next asked her to go to Liberia, I

> met heavy resistance from Minister of Health Adhanom Tedros who threatened

> to intervene directly with President Clinton to keep Mae in Ethiopia.

> Now Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tedros continues to hold Mae in high

> regard.
