The bans won't survive the supreme court. They are writing the laws to try to make the court clarify heller and define assault weapon in a way that they can ban something. We win 5-4 and the majority will probably not give them what they want. If Kennedy retires or RBG dies, we will get a slam dunk. They are racing to get this before the court before either of those happen. Losing the senate is a longshot, but if it happens, it would force POTUS to nominate a moderate kennedy like voter to the court should a position open. The next supreme court nomination will be a brutal fight.
Look at his record of how he has ruled previously. It's more relevant that the political position of his church.
