There's a good excerpt on an experiment from way back when, I forget the guy's name (1800's?), but they had a hollowed out sphere with entrances at the top and bottom and placed a magnet in the center of the sphere.
Apparently when sitting in a dark room for hours, the eyes adjust to be able to see lines of force and the same aurora effect was seen pouring out the top and bottom of the sphere. I guess though the magnet's field has to protrude outside the sphere.
