There seems to be popular support in Taiwan for annexing HK as part of the ROC. If we see a hot war with China this year, I have to wonder if that would be part of the ultimate peace treaty.
ROC troops in HK is something the PRC would only accept after being beaten within an inch of its life, but militarily speaking the U.S. could certainly do that to Beijing.
If the ROC grows to encompass HK, it might spark a movement where various Chinese provinces defect and go over to the ROC side - kind of like how the old Soviet republics broke away in the late 80s and early 90s.
