The mistake you are making is to assume a "plan" in the military sense, is anything at all like a recipe or a train schedule – think instead of the branching tree of decisions made in a chess match. Your plan isn't one like, "I'll do this, then I'll do that, then I'll do this other thing."
Rather, it's "If he does this, I'll do X, and if he responds with F, I'll do Z, but if he replies to X with N, then I'll do W, …" – and so on.
