I read once that men process other men's voices in the part of the brain dedicated to language, and women's voices in the area dedicated to music. Since Mandarin is a tonal language (I'm not sure if that's the official term for it, but the inflection is just as important as the phonem in assigning meaning to a word) I can see how multiple areas of the brain would be needed to deal with it. Sorry I don't have any sauce.
