Spain’s coronavirus death toll DROPS by 2,000… after new counting system introduced

Spanish authorities have revised the coronavirus statistics, weeding out duplicate cases and deaths not linked to the dreaded disease. As a result, the country’s death toll sharply dropped by nearly 2,000.

The Covid-19 figures were revised downward on Monday, after health authorities rolled out a new counting system.

The current sharp drop in the coronavirus death numbers comes after the government was able to identify cases that had been counted twice, as well as to exclude altogether deaths that had been wrongly attributed to the virus.

Spain’s health ministry warned that “the discrepancies that may appear with respect to the data on total cases previously reported are the result of their validation by the autonomous communities and the transition to the new surveillance strategy.” It added that the figures are likely to fluctuate in the next few days as well.

However, even with the revised tally, Spain remains one of the worst affected by the pandemic. The total number of Covid-19 deaths now stands at 26,834 – 1,918 less than the total yesterday. The number of confirmed cases dropped by several hundreds as well, and currently stands at the 235,400 mark.

Irish PM Leo Varadkar Accused of Violating Covid-19 Safety Rules as His Picnic Video Emerges Online

The development comes amid a similar row in neighbouring Britain, where a key adviser to Prime Minister Boris Johnson violated government lockdown rules by travelling with his wife, who had coronavirus symptoms, to his parents’ house. Cummings denied wrongdoing and said he doesn’t regret his actions.

Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar has ignored government rules on safety during the coronavirus pandemic. The 41-year-old, who is openly gay, has been spotted with his partner having a picnic in Dublin’s Phoenix Park with friends, despite government warnings against having picnics.

The footage posted on social media shows Mr. Varadkar holding a cup and chatting with his friends. Although it is impossible to say for certain whether the Taoiseach is standing too close, some social media viewers accused the PM of violating social distancing rules and called on the official to resign.

Federal Judge Rules Florida Cannot Bar Ex-felons Who Cannot Pay Fines, Fees From Voting

A Florida law that requires convicted felons to pay off outstanding fines and fees related to their sentences before they can register to vote was in part unconstitutional, a federal judge ruled.

With the November election up ahead, the decision by U.S. District Judge Robert L. Hinkle on Sunday could potentially give way to hundreds of thousands of ex-felons who have completed “all terms of their sentence including probation and parole” the ability to register to vote, possibly expanding the rolls in a battleground state.

In his 125-page ruling (pdf), Hinkle declared that parts of Florida’s law were unconstitutional. He also ordered the state to put in place a new process that would help ex-felons determine whether they are eligible for vote.

“This pay-to-vote system would be universally decried as unconstitutional but for one thing: each citizen at issue was convicted, at some point in the past, of a felony offense,” the judge wrote in his opinion. “A state may disenfranchise felons and impose conditions on their re-enfranchisement. But the conditions must pass constitutional scrutiny. Whatever might be said of a rationally constructed system, this one falls short in substantial respects.”

Closer Everyday…How many times have I posted on this board Beware Regional Government ..People …What happens what Trump is no longer President

IoT early warning system aimed at curbing future virus outbreaks

IoT blockchain and cryptographic specialist WISeKey says it's making progress on a system that could detect new virus spread and automatically advise regional lockdowns.

IoT sensors that monitor body temperature, in real-time and implemented at scale, could provide geolocation data that would allow potential quarantine areas to be rapidly identified, perhaps even instantaneously. The idea is to shut down emerging viruses before a pandemic could take hold.

IoT security firm WISeKey says it's working on such a solution. "Using the network of billions of interconnected smart IoT sensors, we can detect the spread of viruses by combining the anonymized digital identity with the behavior of a person," WISeKey said in a press release. Importantly, the company claims its solution can be fully secured and trusted.

The biggest problem with such a setup isn't gaining a user base or adoption—there is plenty of IoT out there, and it continues to grow. (WISeKey says it has an installed base of more than 1.5 billion microchips.) Rather, the problem is one of location privacy, and medical records privacy. How does one monitor individual human behavior, such as where a person travels, and at the same time secure an individual's medical dataset across borders, and at the same time enable rapid device implementation globally, without compromising that privacy?

Amazon group that created Kindle and Echo is working on technology for COVID-19 testing

Amazon is enlisting its cutting-edge Lab126 hardware group, best known for creating its Kindle e-readers, Fire tablets and Echo smart speakers, to help build out its own COVID-19 testing capabilities.

In a series of job posts, the Seattle tech giant is seeking new Lab126 mechanical design engineers to “investigate and introduce new technology and methodology to enhance quality and efficiency of COVID-19 testing,” among other responsibilities. The job posts explain that Lab126 has been tasked with helping to keep Amazon’s fulfillment centers safe for employees.

Lab126 is based in Silicon Valley, but the posts indicate these jobs are located in Hebron, Ky., where Amazon is separately hiring lab assistants, scientists and others for its COVID-19 testing program.

The location, near Cincinnati, is notable due to its proximity to a large Amazon Prime Air hub slated to open next year. Amazon may ultimately fly test samples in cargo jets to the Kentucky lab, Bloomberg News reported last week.
