US biotech firm Novavax begins Covid-19 vaccine trials on Australian volunteers after getting $388mn from Bill Gates-backed fund

Novavax is testing a new coronavirus vaccine on human subjects for the first time, launching a phase one clinical trial with a massive grant from an agency founded by Bill Gates, kicking off a storm of concerns online.

The Maryland-based pharma has begun its trial, which will dose some 130 Australian participants with the new inoculation, hoping to see results as early as July and proceed to the second phase.

“Administering our vaccine in the first participants of this clinical trial is a significant achievement, bringing us one step closer toward addressing the fundamental need for a vaccine in the fight against the global Covid‑19 pandemic,” Stanley Erck, Novavax President and CEO, said in a statement on Monday night.

We look forward to sharing the clinical results in July and, if promising, quickly initiating the Phase 2 portion of the trial.

The new initiative got off the ground with a massive $388 million-dollar investment from the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovation (CEPI) – its largest donation to date – a public health foundation established by billionaire Bill Gates.

Military Helicopter Makes Hard Landing in Russia's Far East, Four People Killed

VLADIVOSTOK (Sputnik) - A Mi-8 helicopter made a hard landing at Anadyr airport in Russia's Far East, a law enforcement source said on early Tuesday.

"A Mi-8 made a hard landing at Anadyr airport", the source said.

The authorities of Chukotka autonomous area have confirmed the emergency landing of the helicopter, adding that all four people on board are dead. The helicopter fell from a 15-meter height, causing a fire.

According to a source in the emergency services, a technical malfunction could have been the cause of the hard landing.

"The preliminary cause of the helicopter crash is a technical malfunction", the source said.

Flight recorders have been found at the crash site, the emergency services said, adding that their technical condition is satisfactory.

Fire breaks out at Palmyra Orchards oasis

Palmyra, SANA – A fire erupted at the Palmyra Orchid oasis south of the city, extending from near Palmyra Cham Hotel to the vicinity of the southern catacombs.

Assistant Director of the Palmyra Agriculture Department Ahmad Yousef told SANA’s reporter that the Department, civil defense, and the authorities in Palmyra are working to extinguish the fire, the causes of which have not been determined yet.

Yousef said the fire spread across an area of around 150 hectares of the historical site, which has an overall area of 400 hectares, adding that firetrucks from Hayyan area arrived to help put out the flames.

He said that efforts to control the flames are hindered by the landmines left behind by terrorists, the thickness of trees, and the walls and narrow roads between the orchards.
