On May 13, the French parliament adopted a law that requires online platforms such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat[1] to remove reported "hateful content" within 24 hours and "terrorist content" within one hour. Failure to do so could result in exorbitant fines of up to €1.25 million or 4% of the platform's global revenue in cases of repeated failure to remove the content.
The scope of online content deemed "hateful" under what is known as the "Avia law" (after the lawmaker who proposed it) is, as is common in European hate speech laws, very broadly demarcated and includes "incitement to hatred, or discriminatory insult, on the grounds of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation or disability".
The French law was directly inspired by Germany's controversial NetzDG law, adopted in in October 2017, and it is explicitly mentioned in the introduction to the Avia law.

US Imports Record Amount of Gold From Switzerland as Virus Upends Trade
LONDON - Swiss exports of gold to the United States leapt to 111.7 tons in April by far the biggest monthly total on record while shipments to other destinations dwindled, customs data showed on Tuesday.
The global gold market has been turned on its head by the novel coronavirus, with demand in China and India collapsing due to lockdowns while in the West investors rushed to buy bullion as a safe asset to weather a period of financial turmoil.
High prices on CME Group's Comex exchange spurred shipments to New York.
Switzerland, a major trading, vaulting and refining center for precious metals, exported a total of 131.8 tons of gold in April, up from 96.2 tons in March but slightly lower than in April 2019.
The United States, which typically imports less than a ton of gold a month from Switzerland, accounted for 85% of that total.

900 Taliban prisoners to be freed by Afghan govt under Eid truce in biggest ever single-step release
Kabul plans to set free as many as 900 Taliban prisoners in the biggest-ever release of its kind to date. The two sides are moving closer to launching intra-Afghan peace talks, scheduled as part of the US-brokered peace process.
Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has started the process of releasing up to 2,000 Taliban prisoners as a gesture of goodwill, according to his spokesperson. The move comes after the government accepted the armed group’s announcement of a three-day ceasefire during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr.
In response to the largely upheld ceasefire, on Sunday, the President’s spokesperson delivered a promise to release up to 2,000 Taliban prisoners.
On Monday, the “gesture” began with the release of 100 Taliban prisoners, in an attempt to appease its leaders ahead of the diplomatic talks established by the Doha agreement.
The US-Taliban agreement, signed in Qatar’s capital, Doha, stipulates that the Afghan government is to release up to 5,000 Taliban prisoners, in exchange for which the Taliban would free about 1,000 Afghan military service members.
The initial ceasefire offer posed by the Taliban came directly after its leader Haibatullah Akhunzada pleaded with the United States “not to waste” the opportunity offered by the agreement, which has also set the stage for the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan.

JEFFERSON CITY, MO. - States are spending billions of dollars stocking up on medical supplies such as masks and breathing machines during the coronavirus pandemic. But more than two months into the buying binge, many aren't sharing details about how much they're spending, what they're getting for their money or which companies they're paying.
An Associated Press survey of all 50 states found a hodgepodge of public information about the purchase of masks, gloves, gowns and other hard-to-get equipment for medical and emergency workers.
Illinois has one of the most detailed tracking websites, showing the date, vendor, purpose, quantity and price of each purchase. In most states, it's not that easy. Some provided similar information only after the AP pointed to laws requiring the release of government documents.

The United Nations: Manifesting the Vision of the One humanity
What does the title mean? Well, I hope we will get some sense of this by taking a brief look at the way the UN emerged, and how it performs some of its most important work, namely the preparation and implementation of Declarations and Conventions.
To start, let’s take a look at an image of the United Nations’ General Assembly chamber.
Behind the dais, the golden background is suggestive of a stream of energy from on high. It certainly seems appropriate imagery for a spiritual sanctum, and the Bailey books point to the thought that the General Assembly could be considered a sanctum of the Avatar of Synthesis, Who is particularly associated with the United Nations.
Now here’s a quote from the books which connects the conference theme of Initiation with the vision which the United Nations is seeking to present and to manifest.

The racial gaze is forward to the vision, whether it is the vision of the soul, a vision of a better way of life, of an improved economic situation, or of better inter-racial relationship. We know that the UN is itself an expression of this vision, as well as one of humanity's main instruments for seeking to further express it. The creation of the UN was a highly dramatic and significant moment in human consciousness. It was initiated in 1942 by Roosevelt and Churchill, and the conference which finally created the UN Charter took place in San Francisco over the period beginning just before Wesak 1945, with the UN Charter being adopted on the day of the Full Moon of Cancer, 25 June 1945. It is interesting to contemplate that this conference happened in a city named after a prior incarnation of Master Kuthumi. Also, the UN is mainly based in two of the planetary centres, New York and Geneva; and in fact, the first meeting of the General Assembly took place in London. Interestingly, this year there are two public debates which are being held to help in the selection process of the next UN Secretary General, in New York and London, and the first one is happening in New York today.

Two U.S. Air Force B-1B bombers conducted another flyover in the South China Sea on Tuesday, marking a new increase in flyovers in the region after the bombers deployed to Guam on May 1.
The two bombers were based at Dyess Air Force Base in Texas, and supported a Bomber Task Force mission “showcasing their ability to fly, sail, & operate anywhere international law allows, at the time and tempo of our choosing,” according to the Pacific Air Forces.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 P.M.) – The Iraqi authorities announced on Tuesday, the killing of a high-ranking Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh) during a recent military operation against the terrorist group.
The spokesperson for the commander in chief of the Iraqi Armed Forces, Brigadier Yahya Rasoul, confirmed in a statement, “the killing of Mu’taz Numan Abdul Nayef Najm Al-Jubouri Al-Makani (Hajji Tayseer).”
He said, “Al-Jubouri holds the position of the so-called governor of Iraq and the deputy leader of the ISIS terrorist organization for all state affairs and is responsible for planning and coordinating foreign terrorist operations.”
For his part, the Anti-Terrorism Agency said in a press statement, “After the information provided by the agency that led to the killing of the criminal terrorist Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, to the efforts made by our heroes in following up and arresting the terrorist criminal Abdel Nasser Qirdash, we announce to our great people today the killing of the terrorist Moataz Numan Abdul Nayef Jabouri.”

President Trump praises Richard Grenell as ‘a superstar’: What he ‘has done for this country is incredible’
President Donald Trump on Sunday, May 24, praised Richard Grenell, the acting director of National Intelligence (DNI) for declassifying and releasing a trove of documents related to investigation of the Trump campaign.
“Richard Grenell is a superstar. He had guts, he had courage to do what he did,” President Trump said during an interview with journalist Sharyl Attkisson.
“Richard Grenell has done one of the best jobs I’ve ever seen. I mean, in a short period of time, he exposed them as being corrupt. Look, they were trying to do a takedown of the president of the United States illegally. It’s all illegal,” he continued.
Grenell was nominated in September 2017 to be U.S. ambassador to Germany. Earlier this year, he was called back to Washington to serve as acting DNI to replace Joseph Maguire.

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Hungarian lawmakers on Tuesday approved legislation banning the legal recognition of transgender citizens.
Amendments to the law on the birth, death and marriage registry, approved mostly by deputies from Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party, will prevent transgender or intersex people from legally changing their gender to match their gender identity.
The bill changes the “sex” category in official documents like birth certificates to “sex at birth,” defined as the “biological sex determined by primary sex characteristics and chromosomes.” Once determined, the birth sex category can’t be changed.

Donald Trump Warns of ‘Rigged Election’ with ‘Fraudulent’ Mail-in Ballots
President Donald Trump warned Tuesday the 2020 election would be “rigged” thanks to Democrats pushing mail-in ballots during the coronavirus pandemic.
“This will be a Rigged Election. No way!” Trump wrote on Twitter and Facebook.
The president predicted mass voter fraud in 2020, thanks to Democrat officials using the pandemic to institute mail-in voting.
“There is NO WAY (ZERO!) that Mail-In Ballots will be anything less than substantially fraudulent,” he wrote.
The president pointed to California’s governor Gavin Newsom who signed an executive order to mail ballots to all voters in the November 3 general election.
“Mail boxes will be robbed, ballots will be forged and even illegally printed out and fraudulently signed,” Trump said.
The Republican National Committee, National Republican Congressional Committee, and California Republican Party have filed a lawsuit to block the action, arguing that it is unconstitutional.

Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia, published a blog post this month declaring that the online encyclopedia’s “neutral point of view” policy is “dead” due to the rampant left-wing bias of the site. Noting the article on President Donald Trump, Sanger contrasted its extensive coverage of presidential scandals with the largely scandal-free article on former President Barack Obama.
Sanger also criticized Wikipedia’s coverage of religion and other controversial topics. After Fox News reported on his blog post, many Wikipedians ignored the bias Sanger identified and instead responded by attacking the conservative outlet as well as Sanger.
On May 14, Sanger published a blog piece titled “Wikipedia Is Badly Biased” and started by declaring Wikipedia’s “Neutral Point of View” policy dead. Having founded the online encyclopedia with Jimmy Wales and having been involved in the original drafting of the policy, Sanger offered particular insight into its development and its practice in recent years. On the current policy’s rejection of providing “equal validity” to different views, Sanger stated this went directly against the original policy’s intent and that “as journalists turn to opinion and activism, Wikipedia now touts controversial points of view on politics, religion, and science.
