Floyd was a career criminal in Houston, then wen to Minneapolis "in search of work". The story is he tried to commit a forgery in MN, at which point police were called, and that brought about the altercation in which he died.
The police used excessive force but it's also true that the crook they were trying to arrest was no teddy bear.
