As soon as I see "groundless conspiracy theories" in an article my spidy senses go up. There's a lot of secrecy surrounding this investigation. What are they trying to hide?? What other samples were sent that weren't caught???

In mystery investigation of two Canadian scientists, a request for Ebola, henipavirus from the Wuhan lab

May 5, 2020

The shipment of Ebola and henipavirus samples to Wuhan has given rise to groundless conspiracy theories involving Xiangguo Qiu. But there is no evidence whatsoever tying her to COVID-19

Xiangguo Qiu was a star at the National Microbiology Laboratory, Canada’s premier disease-research facility. As the co-creator of a once-promising treatment for Ebola virus, her work earned kudos around the world.

That reputation made it all the more shocking when she and her biologist husband, Keding Cheng, were escorted from the lab last July as internal and RCMP investigations got underway.

But a year later, those inquiries have yet to be completed, the two scientists appear still in limbo and the Public Health Agency of Canada, which employs them, has revealed another link between the affair and Wuhan, the Chinese city that several months later became the likely source of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A shipment of Ebola and henipavirus samples to China, previously disclosed by the agency and first reported by the National Post, was requested specifically by the Wuhan Institute of Virology, said Eric Morrissette, an agency spokesman. The institute runs the country’s lone BSL-4 disease lab, similar to the Winnipeg-based NML and the highest-security facility for handling pathogens.

Qiu helped train staff at the Wuhan lab, among several trips she took to her native China in recent years.

Yet the government and police have divulged little else about the situation, leaving a haze of mystery over it that has spawned groundless COVID-19 conspiracy theories — and frustrated even NML employees.

“They have told the staff nothing, other than a ridiculous order last summer that we’re not allowed to discuss it or speculate about what may be going on,” said one Public Health Agency employee, not authorized to speak on the record. “Many of us think it is such a huge story that they are trying to keep buried for some pretty serious reasons. We just don’t know what those are.”

The agency has said only that it was looking into an “administrative matter” and had referred “possible policy breaches” to the RCMP.

“The (internal) administrative review remains underway,” said Morrissette recently. “We cannot provide further details.”

As for the RCMP probe, “the matter is still under investigation. No charges have been laid at this time,” said Sgt. Paul Manaigre, a spokesman for the force in Manitoba.

The matter appears to have something to do with that shipment to Wuhan in March 2019 of samples of Ebola and henipavirus — another highly virulent family of pathogens. Neither is related to COVID-19.

“In response to a request from the (Wuhan) Institute for viral samples of Ebola and Henipah viruses, the Public Health Agency of Canada sent samples for the purpose of scientific research in 2019,” Morrissette said. “The National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) shares samples with other public health laboratories — as they do with the NML — to contribute to the advancement of science.”

Then there's this. Look at the date. That's pretty early to put out a huge investment and incentive to learn about Covid-19. Were they worried about the origins of the virus??

Government of Canada Invests $27M in Coronavirus Research

News release

March 6, 2020 – Montreal, Quebec – Canadian Institutes of Health Research

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the Government of Canada has been working with provinces, territories, and international partners to protect the health and well-being of Canadians. As more countries begin to deal with COVID-19 outbreaks, the Government of Canada is investing in Canadian researchers to learn more about this novel coronavirus and to develop tools and resources to combat it.

To further contribute to global efforts to address the COVID-19 outbreak, today, the Honourable Patty Hajdu, Canada’s Minister of Health, and the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced an investment of nearly $27 million to fund coronavirus research. Due to the overwhelming response to the call for research applications, the Government of Canada increased its original investment from $7 million to $27 million. This investment will support 47 research teams from across Canada that will focus on accelerating the development, testing, and implementation of measures to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak. The Ministers made the announcement with the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Economic Development and Official Languages, and the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, President of the Treasury Board.

The research will help inform clinical and public health responses, develop and evaluate diagnostic tools and vaccines, as well as create strategies to tackle misinformation, stigma, and fear. The Government of Canada is providing the funding for this research through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Canada Research Coordinating Committee (CRCC) through the New Frontiers in Research Fund (NFRF), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and Genome Canada (GC).

Hush money??

Liberals Spent $828,046 Funding Research at Wuhan Virus Lab

Both the US and the UK governments are investigating whether the origin of the virus was at one of two labs in Wuhan.

April 16, 2020

The Liberal government gave $828,046 in funding to a virology lab in Wuhan for coronavirus testing according to Rebel News Reporter Sheila Gunn Reid.

“This research addresses the urgent need of rapid point-of-care diagnostics of COVID-19. The collaborative research is conducted by a multi-disciplinary team of virologists, chemists, infectious disease specialists, front-line practitioners, and public health researchers from the University of Alberta, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and Wuhan Institute of Virology (China),” wrote a Government of Canada press release from March.

Both the US and the UK governments are investigating whether the origin of the virus was at one of two labs in Wuhan.

According to the Washington Post, the Wuhan Institute of Virology’s potential for an outbreak has been on the radar of US officials for some time.

In 2018, the US Embassy in Beijing repeatedly sent diplomats to the institute who then reported sensitive information back to Washington. According to the diplomatic cables, the diplomats issued warnings to the US government concerned with the safety of the lab’s operations.

One of the cables obtained by the Washington Post also warned that the lab’s work on bat coronaviruses could pose a pandemic risk.

One of the cables obtained by the Washington Post also warned that the lab’s work on bat coronaviruses could pose a pandemic risk.

A new report by Fox News reveals that government sources familiar with briefings on China’s handling of the virus believe with “increasing confidence” that the virus could have escaped from a Chinese lab.

Ministers within the UK government have also expressed concern and doubt over China’s original claim that the virus emerged in a wet market in Wuhan. Senior government sources told the Daily Mail that the lab origin theory is “no longer being discounted.”

Critics from around the world are increasingly scrutinizing China’s handling of the original coronavirus outbreak and accusing the government of a coverup.

According to a report by the Associated Press, the Chinese Communist Party withheld warning the public about a potential pandemic for six crucial days.

By the time that President Xi Jinping informed the public about the outbreak, over 3,000 people were already infected with the coronavirus.
