A Pennsylvania public school board rejected a textbook last week, as some members called its instruction on climate change left-wing "indoctrination," the York Dispatch reported.

The West York Area school board voted 5-4 on May 19 to scrap "Rubenstein: The Cultural Landscape: An Introduction to Human Geography, 13th edition," the paper said.

Board member Lynn Kohler said the book represented an anti-capitalist extension of the environmental movement, the Dispatch said, and that climate change and globalization are highly political and not universally accepted.

"I believe this falls into the indoctrination category of pushing a particular political belief," Kohler said at the meeting, the paper reported.

Kohler added that the text says resources aren't uniformly distributed across the earth, which makes "it sound like countries like America are bad," the Dispatch reported.

The book was slated for the district's advanced placement human geography course, the paper said.

Board member Todd Gettys told the Dispatch that approving the textbook would be an endorsement of its ideas, and he and Kohler agreed the book could be offered for independent study with students buying their own books to remove the taxpayer burden.

Superintendent Todd Davies said that without a text, it's unlikely the course will run, and students who are signed up for it will be disappointed, the paper said.

Venezuelan asylum-seekers warn that lockdown-era America is a taste of socialism

Two Venezuelan asylum-seekers are warning that the recent shutdowns in response to the coronavirus pandemic are giving Americans a taste of the socialist ideology that drove their homeland down the road to economic and social ruin – and are urging Americans to avoid going down that path in the future, even if public health imperatives dictate strict measures now.

“When this whole situation with the pandemic started, it was like some sort of flashback of how my life was in Venezuela seeing all of these shortages in stores, the lines you have to do to get some groceries, the surveillance ordered by the government to enforce social distancing,” Jorge Galicia told Fox News in an interview Wednesday. “I can see a lot of similarities between the pandemic and how socialism was working for us in Venezuela.”

Galicia, a freedom activist who came to the U.S. in 2018 after he says he suffered political persecution from despot Nicolas Maduro's regime, along with fellow exile Andrés Guilarte, have been warning of the dangers of socialism for months as part of a college campus tour promoted by The Fund for American Studies.

They have a tough climb ahead of them. Progressive ideas such as "Medicare-for-all," basic income plans and exorbitant welfare spending have increasingly caught on, particularly amid the economic downturn, and left-wing members of Congress such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., have become increasingly popular in recent years – with Sanders at one point a top contender for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) says its membership has surged by 10,000 since March.

"People are really starting to just look around and say, 'Man, capitalism isn't working,'" an unnamed co-chair of the Detroit DSA chapter told The Atlantic. "If the markets can’t even produce hand sanitizer or toilet paper or masks during a plague – what good is this system?"

But Galicia and Guilarte have pointed to the ruin of Venezuela under Maduro as an example of how socialism leads to less freedom and less prosperity. Under the Maduro regime, the country has been dogged by malnutrition, disease and violence, as well as accusations that the government is engaged in money laundering and supporting terrorism.

Stay-at-home orders and other restrictions on everyday life in the U.S. aren't anywhere near the tragedy of modern Venezuela. But with jobless claims surging to historic levels amid lockdown measures and some on the left advocating for a massive welfare system as the answer, Galicia and Guilarte have a warning.

“My mission right now is to speak loud and to share my story about what happened and why Venezuela went from being one of the richest nations around the world to being one of the poorest right now – and pretty much the answer is socialism,” Galicia said.

EU Trying To Take Over Serbia-Kosovo Negotiations From U.S.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in a joint statement on the weekend said that EU-led dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo must restart as soon as possible and that shortcuts and quick fixes are excluded from the European plan towards a final deal. The sudden weekend request from France and Germany for the immediate continuation of dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, under the leadership of the EU, was euphorically welcomed in Pristina, because, unlike the U.S. one, it offers no dead line for a solution. The EU does not want a repeat of the Dayton Agreement for Kosovo as it has been a catastrophic failure for Bosnia and the EU was only a passive observer when Bosnia was divided.

For Belgrade, there are several elements that it has to face. First of all, the battle between the EU and the U.S. for supremacy in leading the Kosovo process is underway. In that, the joint letter from Paris and Berlin requests dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina to begin as soon as possible but for the dialogue to be patient, while Washington is also on a diplomatic offensive with the aim to end the process as soon as possible.

The EU has been silent on this issue for a long while, which the U.S. used to activate and engage in dialogue in the absence of European influence. Knowing the traditional position of Washington on the Kosovo issue, Belgrade should prevent the U.S. from taking a lead position in any negotiations because they have always been on the side of a Kosovo independent of Serbia.

With Berlin and Paris, as the leading members of the EU, showing greater interest in resolving the issue between Serbia and Kosovo, they are showing their return to the process in a demonstration of their increased influence in the region. It is important for the Europeans to indicate in some way that they are still interested in having the main influence in the dialogue. If we observe this from Serbia’s side, this could be in its favour as the EU still has member states that do not recognize an independent Kosovo and will defend this position.

Epstein Lawyer: ‘It Was Homicide, But I Don’t Know Who Killed Him’

“He had plans to really fight this case.”

Jeffrey Epstein’s lead attorney says that he knows the billionaire pedophile was murdered in prison, but does not know who the killer/s is/are, noting that Epstein was ‘upbeat and excited’ about going to the courts in an attempt to clear his name.

Epstein’s lawyer David Schoen made the comments in a Discovery documentary series about the disgraced multi-millionaire, revealing that the financier was preparing to reveal key information at trial.

Schoen is adamant that Epstein was not suicidal, noting “At one point a prison psychiatrist came in and asked me to leave so she could talk to Epstein on his own. They talked for five minutes and he seemed relaxed. He was smiling as she left.”

“He had plans to really fight this case. He’d made arrangements to hire me.” Schoen added.

In the three part documentary, titled Who Killed Jeffrey Epstein?, Schoen also said he was very concerned about Nicholas Tartaglione, a huge former cop, charged with four murders, who was initially sharing a cell with Epstein during his first alleged suicide attempt.

“The first incident that happened which the newspapers reported as a possible suicide attempt, Epstein didn’t want to discuss any further. He told the prison officers he couldn’t remember what happened, he didn’t want to answer any more questions,” Schoen said.

“Look, he was in a dangerous situation. He’s a very wealthy guy accused of sex offences stuck in with a guy accused of four murders.” the lawyer added.

“First of all he shouldn’t have been locked up in the general population, that’s reprehensible… He’d have guys who watch the nightly news on the prison TV and say to him, $70 million mansion, huh?” Schoen proclaimed.

“I’ve been through this with other clients and I told him to keep him an eye on this and tell me if anyone was extorting him.” the lawyer said.

Schoen also said that he was disappointed that Epstein’s ‘powerful friends’ kept their distance after his arrest.

“I’d hoped that Prince Andrew would be the one guy who stood up and said he was a friend, I didn’t know anything about it.” Schoen said.

The lawyer also slated the legal team that he took over from, calling Epstein’s former legal representative Jay Lefkowitz a ‘numbskull’.

Schoen also claimed that lawyers acting on behalf of victims were trying to milk Epstein for millions, in some cases asking for payments of up to $25 million to make the claims vanish.

“I wanted people to report on the fact how much lawyers were making off this thing. I’d hope that some people agree that some of these women tricked him.” Schoen declared.

The documentary is airing simultaneously with a Netflix special that features testimony from witnesses and victims of Epstein’s sordid activities.

IDF is bracing for violence after West Bank annexation

Opinion: It is a mistake to believe that the Palestinian population is indifferent to Israel's looming plans for swathes of the territory and the military is preparing for different levels of conflict, from another civil uprising (intifada) or all-out war

In two weeks time, while Israel is still in the throes of the coronavirus pandemic and its economic fallout, the IDF Central Command will be placed on high alert - preparing for armed conflict with the Palestinian Authority, Palestinian security forces, local terror cells and large numbers of demonstrators.

Anything is possible given the anticipated announcement by the Israeli government that it is annexing parts of the West Bank and the Jordan Valley.

All possible scenarios are being translated into combat readiness as the army plans for varying degrees of violence - ranging from a popular uprising (intifada) to all-out confrontation.

Incredibly, the Israeli public conversation has ignored the looming annexation. Some refuse to believe that the government would take such a step given the warning from the Trump administration against doing so without negotiations with the Palestinians.

Some believe the government would suffice with a declaration but no action on the ground, or that the annexation would encompass only the small cluster of settlements along the pre-1967 borders (Green Line), which would likely remain in Israeli hands as part of an agreement.

Either way, they are kidding themselves.

The Palestinian public has a very different take on the situation. What some in Israel may see as indifference on the Palestinian street could quickly change.

‘Horrific’: Naked, underweight teenagers found locked in room in Brisbane

Queensland Police have discovered two naked and malnourished teenagers locked in the room of a house where a dead body was also found.

Police officers arrived at the property on Midson Street in Stafford in the city’s north at 7am on Wednesday.

They were responding to reports of the sudden death of a man and found the 49-year-old’s body inside.

But while in the home, it’s understood officers heard noises coming from a locked bedroom and found two men aged 17 and 19 inside.

They were living in squalid conditions, naked and underweight. According to Nine News, the pair suffer from intellectual disabilities.
