Go see what an Orthodox Church is all about. I think you might find the experience enlightening and confusing in equal measure. You will find no trace of modernism - everything is as it was practiced 1500+ years ago.

Russian and Antiochian jurisdictions in the US have large numbers of converts who have arrived after long personal journeys from somewhere else: mostly for the reasons you mention.

>I'd add ignorance as well since most of them attended schools that successfully made them idiots.

But also convinced them that their ignorant opinions were as valid as those of the learned and informed.

Here’s a liturgy from the weekend just passed. It’s a little artificial, as the church is in Riverside CA and thus there are few people present apart from the clergy. The same channel also has the recent Pascha night service from St Andrews Orthodox, which is the greatest service of the year. But wherever you are in the Orthodox world, the services are the same for any particular day, regardless of the language.

The priest of St Andrews, Fr Josiah Trenham, is one of the most conservative and intelligent people you’ll ever meet - in a really good way. A fabulous speaker and pastor.
