I don't understand why this is thought of as some lost black art nowadays. The internet is simply a network of computers, not a syndicate of companies that one must join. Just add a damn computer to the network and do whatever you want with it. No, you won't be able handle thousands of simultaneous connections. Yes, might break your ISP's TOS, but fuck 'em–they never notice unless you're blasting CP or copyrighted material everywhere. The only thing really stopping anyone from establishing a presence on the web is the fact that everyone forgot that they can do so without an intermediary like FB/Geocities (oldfag lol)/whatever.
Just do it.
