Gawd I hate twatter. First picture is when I have "trending for you" turned on. Second pic is when I have it turned off.
In other words, most of the time you see wants trending because it's what's your friends are sharing. But if none of your friends are sharing a topic, you won't see that topic…. at all it seems.

Best bet is to you third party websites for honest analytics.
