"Big Day For Fairness" - White House Plans To Empower FCC To Regulate American Social Media Giants

Update (1150ET): In a statement that clearly established Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats as the greater of two evils for Silicon Valley tech giants and their leadership, the Democratic Speaker of the House said Twitter had not gone 'far enough' in fact-checking President Trump, while accusing Facebook of selling out the American people for money.

According to CNBC, Pelosi said Trump's executive order, expected to be signed later on Thursday, is a "distraction", but added that Twitter had "not gone far enough" in fact-checking the president, and called the current situation "outrageous"

At Facebook, she accused Zuckerberg of "only caring about making money". "All they want is tax cuts and no regulation…there is no honor among thieves," she reportedly said, according to Mui.

It appears the "techlash" in Washington remains alive and well.

Update (0850ET): Fox Business has just confirmed that President Trump plans to sign an executive order to implement everything we've discussed below.

Fox reporter Edward Lawrence claims that the order will "examine the legal protections" enjoyed by these companies, suggesting that the administration will also lay out its legal rationale for regulating speech on these platforms in this way.

Update (0840ET): Just as we expected, President Trump just confirmed that he will be rolling out his administration's agenda for regulating speech on American social media platforms on Thursday - and will probably make a show of it, to keep the news media focused on his latest culture war, and less about the growing coronavirus death toll.

I’ve signed death certificates during Covid-19. Here’s why you can’t trust any of the statistics on the number of victims

As an NHS doctor, I’ve seen people die and be listed as a victim of coronavirus without ever being tested for it. But unless we have accurate data, we won’t know which has killed more: the disease or the lockdown?

I suppose most people would be somewhat surprised to know that the cause of death, as written on death certificates, is often little more than an educated guess. Most people die when they are old, often over eighty. There is very rarely going to be a post-mortem carried out, which means that, as a doctor, you have a think about the patient’s symptoms in the last two weeks of life or so. You go back over the notes to look for existing medical conditions.

Previous stroke, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, angina, dementia and suchlike. Then you talk to the relatives and carers and try to find out what they saw. Did they struggle for breath, were they gradually going downhill, not eating or drinking?

If I saw them in the last two weeks of life, what do I think was the most likely cause of death? There are, of course, other factors. Did they fall, did they break a leg and have an operation – in which case a post-mortem would more likely be carried out to find out if the operation was a cause.

28 North Koreans Charged In Sweeping Conspiracy To Launder $2.5 Billion For Nuclear Program

Is the Trump Administration finally coming around to the notion that disarming North Korea's nuclear arsenal is never going to happen? Well, at least not while the Kims are still in power.

Since President Trump started his 'bromance' with Kim Jong Un, which briefly reemerged following the Dear Leader's purported brush with illness, corners of the intelligence community have been grumbling to the press about how the president was being played by both Kim and his chief benefactor, President Xi and China, which accounts for more than 90% of North Korea's foreign trade, and protects the Hermit Kingdom from harsher penalties and sanctions via China's veto power at the security council.

As the administration ramps up its assault on Beijing as "decoupling" moves into hyperdrive, the DoJ on Thursday has unsealed an indictment against North Korean and Chinese nationals who are accused of operating a multibillion-dollar money laundering scheme to help fund North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

The indictment charges 28 North Koreans and five Chinese nationals of using a web of more than 200 shell companies to launder more than $2.5 billion in assets through the international banking system. according to the NYT.

Ultimately, the money flowed back to the Foreign Trade Bank of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, North Korea’s primary, state-operated foreign exchange bank, which is also known as Josen Bank. It's believed the money was then used to finance the country's nuclear program, which is believed to have produced several rather rudimentary nuclear weapons, making NK an unacknowledged nuclear power (kind of like Israel).

Since succeeding his dead father as North Korea's supreme leader, the third in the Kim dynasty, Kim has overseen four underground nuclear tests and has pushed for North Korea to heavily invest in its nuclear weapons and missile programs while its poverty-stricken people struggle to feed their families.

Under his leadership, NK flight-tested three intercontinental ballistic missile tests in 2017 (remember that?). Kim recently commanded the country's top officials to start ramping up the country's weapons program again as talks with the White House stalled, with both sides acknowledging that the impasse reached during a second global summit in Hanoi - the US insisted that NK must first give up some or all weapons to get sanctions relief, while NK insisted on a gradual schedule of relief in exchange for disarmament - remains insurmountable.

Arizona sues Google for ‘misleading’ users by secretly tracking their personal data on smartphones

Google has been accused of collecting data on people’s whereabouts and their searches even when they disabled these options on their mobile devices.

The lawsuit, filed by Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, alleges that certain apps developed by the Silicon Valley-based company tracked and stored location records and search history on Android-running smartphones even when users turned off these options.

The apps that allow the collection of personal data without users’ consent include mapping and weather, which violates Arizona’s consumer protection laws, the lawsuit says.

“When consumers try to opt out of Google’s collection of location data, the company is continuing to find misleading ways to obtain information and use it for profit,” Brnovich said in an interview.

They may be the most innovative company in the world, but that doesn’t mean they’re above the law.

Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda fired back, saying the authorities “appear to have mischaracterized our services.”

“We have always built privacy features into our products and provided robust controls for location data. We look forward to setting the record straight,” Castaneda said.

Arizona began investigating Google’s practices in 2018 after a report by the Associated Press found that several Google apps collect data even when users choose privacy settings that say that they will prevent the tech giant from doing so.

China Secures Brazilian Soy As Trade War Restart Appears Imminent

With a new round of trade war increasingly likely between the US and China, Beijing has been buying Brazilian soybeans in a sign the Asian nation may be looking to secure an alternative source of supplies. According to Bloomberg, the world’s top soybean importer purchased more than 10 cargoes in Brazil this week, despite higher prices. In a further sign that China appears to be distancing from the US, Bloomberg adds that while China bid for American soy on Tuesday, state-run buyers were absent from the market Wednesday, the people said.

"Even with Brazilian soybeans being more expensive this autumn, China is securing this origin via what they see as the political risk in U.S. soybean/grain sales," Chicago-based consultants AgResource said.

Most of the soybeans Brazil sold to China were for August and September, with some deals stretching into October. This is a disappointment for US farmer, because AgResource said it "had expected that the U.S. would be able to garner Chinese demand from late August into early 2021."

“The U.S. will still dominate China’s purchases in this time slot, but totals will be cut from prior expectations,” the consultants said.

As a reminder, as part of the Phase 1 "trade deal", China pledged to buy $36.5 billion in US agricultural goods this year, an increase of $12.5 billion over 2017 levels, before the start of the trade war. However due to the disruptions from the pandemic, not to mention the fact that China never intended to follow through with the trade deal, purchases have been running well behind; meanwhile the record plunge in Brazil's currency has made its products more attractive.

An escalation in tensions between Beijing and Washington could jeopardize outstanding U.S. soy cargoes to China. About 1.8 million tons of soybeans sales to China for the current marketing year and 1 million tons for the next year are yet to be shipped, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Zuckerberg: I Don’t Think that Facebook, Internet Platforms ‘Should Be Arbiters of Truth’

In an interview that aired Thursday on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg weighed in on President Donald Trump’s feud with Twitter after the social media platform recently inserted fact-checking links to his tweets about vote-by-mail.

Zuckerberg said he does not think Facebook nor other online social media platforms “should be arbiters of truth,” but he did say there are lines that cannot be crossed.

“We’re different companies,” Zuckerberg stated. “But I think we’ve been pretty clear on what I think the right approach is, which is I don’t think that Facebook or Internet platforms, in general, should be arbiters of truth. I think that’s kind of a dangerous line to get down to in terms of deciding what is true and what isn’t. And I think political speech is one of the most sensitive parts in a democracy and people should be able to see what politicians say and there’s a ton of scrutiny already. Political speech is the most scrutinized speech already by a lot of the media, and I think that will continue. Of course, we have lines.”

“Because we don’t want to be determining what is true and false, doesn’t mean that politicians can say whatever they want,” he continued. “And our policies are grounded in trying to give people as much of a voice as possible while saying if you are going to harm people in specific ways if you are going to do something that’s going to cause violence if you are saying that something is a cure to a disease that has been proven to be a cure, but it’s not, and that could lead people to either not seek another treatment or do something that could be harmful, we’ll take that down no matter who says that.”

Jack Dorsey Goes on Defensive After Twitter ‘Fact-Checks’ President Trump

In a recent series of Tweets, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey defended his recent decision to “fact check” and place warnings on two of President Donald Trump’s tweets. According to Dorsey, Twitter “fact checking” the president does not make the company an “arbiter of truth,” claiming that instead, the site was attempting to “connect the dots of conflicting statements.”

Breitbart News recently reported that on May 26, Twitter added a “fact check” label to a pair of tweets from President Trump expressing widely-held concerns about mail-in ballots increasing the risk of voter fraud. The “fact check” link, which urged users to “get the facts about mail-in ballots,” directed users to a Twitter “moment” — a collection of links and tweets, handpicked by Twitter employees.

The “moment,” intended to fact-check the President, was filled with establishment media articles from CNN, the Washington Post and other outlets, baselessly asserting that Trump was lying about mail-in ballots. This is reportedly the first time the social media platform has branded Trump’s tweets with a link to a “fact check” of this type.

Now, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is defending his actions, stating in a recent tweet: “Fact check: there is someone ultimately accountable for our actions as a company, and that’s me. Please leave our employees out of this. We’ll continue to point out incorrect or disputed information about elections globally. And we will admit to and own any mistakes we make.”

His tweet is in response to articles from Breitbart News and other outlets highlighting the posts of Twitter employee Yoel Roth, whose official job title is “Head of Site Integrity,” who authored a blog post outlining the platform’s new policy used to “fact check” Trump. Roth has a history of tweeting misinformation, such as claiming there are “actual Nazis” in the White House.

Dorsey went on to state that this does not make Twitter an “arbiter of truth,” claiming that instead, the site was attempting to “connect the dots of conflicting statements.”

Dorsey attempted to clarify why Twitter fact-checked the President’s tweets, writing: “Per our Civic Integrity policy (https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/election-integrity-policy…), the tweets yesterday may mislead people into thinking they don’t need to register to get a ballot (only registered voters receive ballots). We’re updating the link on @realDonaldTrump’s tweet to make this more clear.”

Anthony Fauci Calls on Christians to ‘Forestall’ Receiving Communion to Prevent Virus Spread

Dr. Anthony Fauci has urged Christians to wear masks, practice social distancing, and forego singing and receiving communion during worship services to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

In an interview with the Jesuit-run America magazine published Wednesday, Dr. Fauci said that churches should “limit the number of people, so that you don’t have people in the pews right next to each other,” and the faithful should “absolutely” wear masks.

Regarding the distribution of communion, Fauci said he does not think there is a safe way to go about it and the practice should be abandoned until further notice.

“I think for the time being, you just gotta forestall that,” he said.

Fauci, who identifies as a Jesuit-educated Catholic who has distanced himself from “the concept of organized churches, religions,” said that at the moment he believes that receiving communion is too risky, even if it involves only the distribution of the consecrated bread without the cup.

“As many times as a priest can wash his hands, he gets to Communion, he puts it in somebody’s hand, they put it in their mouth,” he said, “it’s that kind of close interaction that you don’t want when you’re in the middle of a deadly outbreak.”

Fauci said he thinks that religious practice should vary from place to place, according to the intensity and extent of infections.

“It depends on where you are,” he said. “If you are in a region, a city, a county, where there is a significant amount of infection, I think with distributing Communion, I think that would be risky. I’m telling you that as a Catholic, it would be risky.”

In recent weeks, there have been numerous confrontations between religious and civil leaders regarding the proper jurisdiction of each when it comes to the practice of the faith.

One notorious case was that of Minnesota, where the state’s Catholic Bishops and Lutheran leaders announced that public worship would resume on May 26, in defiance of restrictions put in place by Governor Tim Walz.

Many people of faith “were disappointed in Governor Walz’s May 13 announcement that he would end the Stay-at-Home order to allow more commerce but prohibit religious gatherings of more than ten people,” an order that “defies reason,” stated the Catholic bishops in a May 20 letter.

Insisting that the life of faith is “essential,” the bishops declared that they have given Catholic parishes “permission for the resumption of the public celebration of Mass on Tuesday, May 26, which will give us time to be ready for the celebration of Pentecost on May 31.”

“We are blessed to live in a nation that guarantees the free exercise of religion,” they said. “This right can only be abridged for a compelling governmental interest, and only in a way that is narrowly tailored to be the least restrictive means of achieving the desired end.”

Last Saturday Governor Walz told reporters that it is unclear whether worship constitutes something “essential,” countering an assertion made recently by President Trump.

“I think the case that the president is making and that may be up for debate in this country of deeming houses of worship essential, essential services and that’s one that we take into consideration,” the Democrat governor said during an hour-long briefing on opening up religious services during the coronavirus lockdown.

White House press sec. Kayleigh McEnany believes God put her in the administration 'for a purpose,' says conservative Christians drive media crazy

She only cares about an audience of 1

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany says that her faith has played an integral part in her career, and she believes God has her right where he wants: the White House.

What are the details?

In a wide-ranging interview with CBN News, McEnany said that she has heavily relied on her faith all throughout her life, but especially now, as the mouthpiece of the Trump administration.

"I believe God put me in this place for a purpose and for a reason like he does with each and every life," McEnany said. "We're all here for a reason."

She added that she felt God's presence immediately before her very first White House press briefing.

"I was in panic mode right before," she admitted. "I was just rattled and extremely nervous and feeling a lot of anxiety. I called my mom and on speakerphone, my family and we all prayed together … and all of a sudden, I took a deep breath, and after those prayers, moved forward. I felt such strength, went in and talked to the president, and then walked out and did the job that only could be done if God was there helping you along the way."

She also revealed that she recently led Bible studies while working with the Trump campaign.

"We would pray and read the Word," she recalled. "It just gave a little pep in our step because these days are demanding, they're challenging, they're long in politics, whether you're a Democrat or Republican. That's the nature of the job. It was a little rod of lightning, of just energy and joy in our day."

What else?

McEnany, 32, also said that she believes the outpouring of conservative, Christian support that President Donald Trump receives on a daily basis drives much of the media and other naysayers crazy.

"People are attacked for their faith," she said. "Not just me, but Christian men and women across this country. It's unfortunate, but I think we have found a real voice in President Trump, who stood for religious freedom and pro-life, and [has] given us this boldness."

She explained that she first experienced the bias when she was enrolled at Harvard Law School.

"I realized it was that megaphone and that kind of boldness we needed, and that kind of fighter we needed to represent the Christian community," McEnany added.

In conclusion, McEnany pointed out that she still serves God in everything she does.

"My mission in life is that when I pass that He will look at me and say, 'Well done good and faithful servant,'" she said. “If I can end my life that way, it doesn't matter what the people say on the way there."

Why do over 400,000 migrants in Germany have their birthday on January 1st?

For more than 400,000 Germany’s immigrants, Jan. 1 is marked as their birthday in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals, with the majority of this group coming from Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan, according to data obtained by the immigration restrictionist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

According to the data from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), a quarter of the 416,420 migrants born on January 1 entered Germany in 2015, another 116,000 afterwards, and the rest of them before. AfD MP René Springer, who originally requested the information, has since released it to the public.

Jan. 1 was also marked as a birthday of the 13 of the 47 recently admitted minors from the Greek migrant camps who were allowed to enter Germany during the coronavirus crisis.

So why is Jan. 1 such a popular date for migrant birthdays?

Simply put, it is the date Germany lists on official documents for those migrants who apply for asylum with an ID and who do not know or refuse to say when their date of birth is.

For many of these migrants, their status as a minor greatly depended entirely on them telling German authorities that they did not know their birth date. Many of them applied without identification or government documents, leaving them free to claim they were a minor.
