Mass manufacturing will always have limitations. Mass manufacturing, by it's very nature, will target high demand, high volume markets.

Methods reflect purpose. Not scalable to the home.
CAD-CAM … Open source. CNC micromills… No reason any young man shouldn't be able to get a tabletop 5axis with today's tech and open source ideas.
Home made electron guns. Direct plasma depositing/sintering… Future of home nano-manufacturing?
Mass spectrometer… Trace element/compound separation?
Small scale. Not necessarily scalable to mass manufacture. Potentially viable for home. Self-made ICs. Perhaps not 'industry quality' - but anything that can potentially print turbomolecular pumps with in-casing control circuitry is notable.
The blacksmith is not obsolete. His tools have simply evolved while the culture has not placed emphasis on self-reliance. Call the repair man rather than be the repair man. Consumer mentality versus producer mentality.
