Shortly after the Oakland Police Department declared the Friday evening protest of the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis an “unlawful assembly,” the department announced it was investigating a shooting of two federal officers with the federal courthouse.
According to authorities, the incident took place in the area of 12th and Clay.
A statement tweeted by the police department said, “it appears the shooting is unrelated to tonight’s demonstration.”
The alleged shooting took place less than half a mile away from the Oakland Police Headquarters where demonstrators gathered beginning around 8 p.m. to protest Floyd’s killing.
Around 9 p.m., officers began using tear gas to disperse a crowd at 7th and Broadway while protestors set off fireworks and hurled bottles toward a line consisting of officers and Alameda County sheriff’s deputies.
An “unlawful assembly” was declared at 9:30 p.m. and the use of tear gas escalated. Protestors moved around downtown, ripping boards off of buildings and smashing windows as officers threw flash bangs.
Oakland Police did not provide an update on the conditions of the shooting victims and it remains unclear if any the department has any suspects in custody.
