Derek Chauvin, cop charged in George Floyd death, jailed outside county

Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis cop accused of killing George Floyd, is being held in a jail outside the county where he was arrested because of threats made to the county sheriff’s office, the state’s criminal investigative agency said. Chauvin, 44, is being held in the Ramsey County Jail on $500,000 bail after he was charged Friday — in Hennepin County — with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, the Star-Tribune reported.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension explained the jail choice late Friday, several hours after Chauvin was charged.

Ramsey County lies directly east of Hennepin County and has about 550,000 residents — less than half of Hennepin’s 1.25 million.

“The BCA communicated with the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, which was dealing with potential threats to their facilities at the time of the arrest,” spokeswoman Jill Oliveira told the Star Tribune. “They directed us to book him into the Ramsey County jail.”

MN Gov. "fully mobilizes" National Guard, says riots "no longer in any way about George Floyd"

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz announced Saturday that he has authorized "full mobilization" of the state's National Guard as he said, "The situation in Minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd. It is about attacking civil society, instilling fear and disrupting our great cities."

The governor said:

"Let's be very clear. The situation in Minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd. It is about attacking civil society, instilling fear and disrupting our great cities."

Merkel won’t attend G7 summit in person if US goes ahead

BERLIN (AP) — Chancellor Angela Merkel will not personally attend a meeting in the U.S. with the leaders of the world’s major economies if President Donald Trump goes ahead with it, unless the course of the coronavirus spread changes by then, her office said Saturday.

After canceling the Group of Seven summit, originally scheduled for June 10-12 at Camp David, Trump said a week ago that he was again considering hosting an in-person meeting of world leaders because it would be a “great sign to all” of things returning to normal during the pandemic.

Immediately after that announcement, Merkel suggested she had not yet made up her mind on whether to attend in person or by video conference, but her office told the dpa news agency she has now made a decision.

As of today, given the overall pandemic situation, she cannot commit to participating in person,” her office said. It added that the chancellor would continue to monitor the coronavirus situation in case things change.

Greek mayor says his town won’t accept one more migrant

The mayor of the Greek town Grevena has announced that he will not permit any more migrants or asylum seekers to be transferred into his city from the Aegean islands.

During an unscheduled press conference on Thursday evening, Mayor Giorgos Dastaman voiced his opposition to the government’s plan to move migrants mainly from the islands of Lesvos and Samos to hotels in mountainous areas of northern Greece.

“We won’t accept a single extra refugee,” Dastamanis said, arguing that other regions in Greece which haven’t taken in as many migrants as his region – Western Macedonia – should be the destinations of future migrant transfers.

“Despite the government’s explicit assurances that no more refugees will come to the Municipality of Grevena as the competent ministry had acknowledged that our region is already carrying the heaviest weight in the region of Western Macedonia, we are eventually surprised by press reports and unofficial sources that other migrants are expected,” the mayor continued, as quoted by the Greek newspaper Kathimerini.

Yiannis Yiatsios, the deputy regional governor of the Grevena municipality, echoed Dastaman’s sentiments, saying that the region was buckling under the weight of the “disproportionate and unbearable burden” placed on it by the national government.

In late April, the Greek migration ministry approved a plan to transfer 2,380 migrants from reception centers on its Aegean islands to hotel and apartment accommodations on its mainland, as previously reported by Voice of Europe.

Pentagon puts military police on alert to go to Minneapolis at Trump's request

As civil unrest escalates across dozens of American cities over the death of George Floyd, the Pentagon has ordered the U.S. Army, at President Trump's request, to put active-duty military police units on alert to deploy to Minneapolis.

The get-ready orders were delivered Friday, after President Trump had a phone conversation with Defense Secretary Mark Esper, National Security Adviser Robert O' Brien, and several other government officials, asking for military options to squelch the Minneapolis protests that have descended to looting, vandalism, and arson.

Soldiers from Fort Bragg in North Carolina and Fort Drum in New York have been instructed to be prepared to deploy within four hours if necessary, according to sources directly associated with the orders.

The military police units would be deployed under the Insurrection Act of 1807, last used in 1992 during the Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King trial.

Units from Fort Drum are scheduled to head to Minneapolis first. Approximately 800 U.S. soldiers would be deployed if the city requests aid.

Amid the chaos, rioting, and looting that followed the death of Minneapolis resident George Floyd last week, the daughter of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) passed on a list of “supplies” for protesters tweeted by the Twin Cities Democratic Socialists.

Items on the list retweeted by Isra Hirsi included bandages, saline for eye washing, and plywood for shields that could also double as weapons to be used against police officers.

Kenneth Braithwaite was sworn in as the newest secretary of the Navy during a private ceremony today at the Pentagon, capping what has been a tumultuous six months for the department’s leadership.

The Senate confirmed Braithwaite last week after he offered members of the Senate Armed Services Committee a sobering assessment of where he saw the Department of the Navy today.

“It saddens me to say: the Department of the Navy is in troubled waters due to many factors, primarily the failings of leadership. Whether [Glenn Defense Marine Asia], ship collisions, judicial missteps or the crisis on USS [Theodore] Roosevelt, they are all indicative of a breakdown in the trust of those leading the service,” Braithwaite said during his May 7 confirmation hearing.
