United Nations slammed for tweeting against racism but not Islamophobia
Twitter users pounced on a post from the United Nations decrying racism because it didn’t include “Islamophobia.” “STOP racism, STOP anti-semitism, STOP xenophobia, STOP intolerance, We can all #StandUp4HumanRights and help build a world free of discrimination, hate & violence,” the U.N. posted on Twitter Saturday, sparking immediate criticism for not including racism against Muslims. Twitter users quickly pointed out that discrimination against Muslims wasn’t included in the post, forcing the U.N. to reassure them they are focused on that issue as well. “Stop Islamophobia,” one Twitter user wrote, followed by another user who said, “Stop Islamophobia, stop anti Islam propaganda.”
“We appreciate your comment,” the United Nations account responded several times to people who asked them about Islam. “The UN works to end all forms of discrimination everywhere, including Islamophobia, and promotes equality for everyone.” The U.N. tweet comes after a black man arrested for alleged forgery in Minneapolis, Minnesota, died in police custody in an incident that sparked riots after a video surfaced of a white police officer kneeling on his throat for several minutes. The police officer, Derek Chauvin, was fired from the police department and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
