If you would like an excellent look at carrier landings and the different ppl involved search pitching decks part 1 and 2 on youtube
→ If you have time start with part one that I embedded
→ If you want to get straight to the night landings and hear all the comms between the pilots and paddles go straight to part 2
"Call the ball" is a request for information to be delivered to the Landing Signal Officer (LSO). This is normally heard during night or low weather operations when being directed to the carrier by the air traffic controllers deep in the ship, watching the radar display and getting the planes to a stable position behind the ship. They've been directing and refining the aircraft position for about 20 miles and hand the plane off to LSO control when they get within a mile. Here's how the cadence goes:
Controller: "403, 3/4 of a mile, on and on, call the ball."
That's the aircraft side number, the distance behind the ship, where you are in relation to glideslope and lineup, and the request for information. Here's the usual response:
Pilot or RIO: "403, Hornet ball, 4.5."
You've confirmed your side number so that your squadron representatives in the CATCC ("catsee," the carrier air traffic control center in the ship) and on the LSO platform know that it's you (the maintenance guys are also listening in, along with the deck handlers, who are going to have to be ready to quickly get you out of the landing area and to the proper parking spot).
Next, you've identified your aircraft type for the dudes running the arresting gear. If they dial in the wrong settings, it could be disastrous.
By saying the word, "ball," you're indicating you're seeing the Optical Landing System. Not only that, you're seeing the light of the Fresnel Lens that indicates where you are in relation to the glideslope. If you can't see it, you call "clara." They will likely start talking you in, telling you where you are in reference to glideslope and centerline.
Ironic that his last song played on phone is

Broad & Belvedere is about 15 minutes away
Where neighborhoods meet more of the city
VCU Campus right there (brand new modern art building on Borad and Belevedere)
Headed down broad you get into the art district where there are a lot of galleries and restaurants and VCU medical center
Going the other way you have more VCU campus housing and the Siegel Center
Doesn't surprise me that Broad and Belvedere is the place – there are a lot of shootings and police activity in the surrounding shitholes (neighborhoods)
