DOD’s top scientist shoots down airborne lasers for missile defense
Could lasers aboard aircraft like the F-35 shoot down enemy missiles as they launch? The Pentagon has batted around the idea for decades. But on Wednesday, its top scientists said he doesn’t think it’s practical, and said the Defense Department will put its research resources elsewhere.
“I want to put an end to that discussion. We’re not investing in airborne platforms for shooting down adversary missiles” with directed energy, said Mike Griffin, defense undersecretary for research and engineering.
The idea of mounting a laser or other directed-energy weapon on a fighter jet or drone for missile defense has surfaced and disappeared various times. Early last year, it resurfaced in the 2019 Missile Defense Review, the bible for U.S. missile defense. “Developing scalable, efficient, and compact high energy laser technology, and integrating it onto an airborne platform holds the potential to provide a future cost-effective capability to destroy boosting missiles in the early part of the trajectory,” reads the Review, the bible for U.S. missile defense. “Doing so would leverage technological advances made earlier in DoD’s Airborne Laser Program, including for example advances in beam propagation and beam control. MDA is developing a Low-Power Laser Demonstrator to evaluate the technologies necessary for mounting a laser on an unmanned airborne platform to track and destroy missiles in their boost-phase.”

Los Angeles Riots Spread to Fairfax District, Beverly Hills as Officials Impose Curfew
Los Angeles saw riots spread to the Fairfax District and Beverly Hills on Saturday in what is shaping up to be another tumultuous night in the nation’s second largest city.
The riots follow a night of protests and looting in downtown L.A., where thousands gathered to air their grievances over the death earlier this week of George Floyd in Minneapolis. L.A. city officials have set a curfew to take effect at 8 p.m., impacting most of the downtown L.A. area.
“Violators are subject to arrest,” the L.A. Police Department said in announcing the curfew.
CURFEW in Downtown LA tonight. No one is allowed in public or on the streets.
The curfew will apply to DTLA, between the 110 fwy on the west, Alameda on the east, and 10 fwy on the south, and 101 fwy on the north between 8 p.m. and 5:30 a.m.

US Military Reportedly Gathering Intelligence About Ongoing Riots in Seven States
Not all of these states called in the National Guard to respond to the nationwide protests against police brutality that erupted in the wake unarmed African American George Floyd losing his life.
The American military has been monitoring protests and gathering information about them in seven US states, The Nation reported citing Defence Department documents, purportedly obtained from unprotected cloud storage. The media outlet says the documents were later moved to a protected network for classified files, despite only being marked as "For Official Use Only".
According to the cited documents, the military was bracing to respond to emerging riots in five states that have already activated or deployed the National Guard - Minnesota, Ohio, Colorado, Tennessee, and Kentucky, and in two states that have not yet done so - New York and Arizona.
"Without such situational awareness, it would be more difficult for DOD to respond if it becomes necessary", spokesman for the Department of Defence, Chris Mitchell said responding to a question from The Nation about the documents.
