'Determined to wreak havoc': Bellevue looting was organized event, police say

BELLEVUE, Wash. – Hundreds of looters ransacked major shopping malls and even small businesses across Bellevue amid the peaceful protests Sunday in a coordinated event that police say was organized by outside groups.
"Several groups that showed up in Bellevue (Sunday) were bound and determined to wreak havoc," said Bellevue Police spokesperson Meeghan Black.
Around mid-afternoon Sunday, looters smashed their way into the shuttered Bellevue Square Mall, stealing from dozens of stores inside, as other groups simultaneously hit Lincoln Square and the Bravern.
"They were in multiple locations at the same time and really caused a lot of problems," Black said. "It was just a disgraceful day here in Bellevue. It was very sad to see this happen."
Police did receive intelligence that it was a known gang unit coming into the city to be destructive.
"They were even inciting participation on social media," Black said.

KIRKLAND, Wash. – The city of Kirkland is asking its "brick and mortar" stores to close early Monday at 1 p.m. due to fears of a renewed round of regional looting.
The city is also asking residents to avoid commercial shopping areas after 1 p.m.
“We are receiving reports that Kirkland is a possible target for looting and destruction,” said City Manager Kurt Triplett. “Out of an abundance of caution we’re encouraging these precautionary measures to help prevent any criminal activity that could cause further damage to our local businesses and community.”
The city manager will be declaring an emergency to help the city respond to any threats, though they say at this point they won't issue a curfew.
Kirkland says their police department is prepared to respond to any incidents and reminds its residents that they are still in Phase 1 of the COVID-19 recovery efforts and that any non-essential travel should be limited anyway.
Kirkland is the city just north of Bellevue, where there were Riots and Looting Yesterday
